Never saw this before!

My guess is never. CARB has been around since 1967.

I suspect that like so many other social, environmental, and political subjects nowadays that the closer you get to 50% “consensus”, the harder it becomes to even get another 1%, until it finally becomes a stalemate and both sides claim majority status.

I actually miscounted. Thirteen states plus DC have adopted CARB standards regarding Low-Emissions Vehicles. It used to be sixteen, but AZ and NM repealed their laws.

Of those, eleven have also adopted CARB Zero-Emissions Vehicle standards.

No state adopts all of CARB’s nonsense, though we are all somehow cursed with CARB-compliant gas cans. I hate those things, and haven’t bought one in years. I buy metal “utility” cans (Jerry cans) and use them how I want.

It was only 5 states just few years ago, so guess how long it will take to change 16 following states to 48 or even 50?

PS Kayteg, In most state light duty not automatically register as commercial, as you put it. Only a few states I’m aware of do that, but most don’t.

I actually missed cheaper and easier California fees.
Clark County (Las Vegas) has only commercial registration for trucks, what cost more in registration than even commercial in CA, while insurance tripled to what I paid in CA.
Much cheaper real estate and cost of living in Las Vegas compensate it well, but still.
From what I remember, my brother in WA is not paying much less for registration than I do, but his biggest truck is Toyota 4 Runner.

From what you remember, idk what you pay, nor do I care, but WA reg fees aren’t too bad. They do get up there if you get hit with Seattle resident city tax (and a couple other cities to a lesser extent) or RTA tax if you live in the wrong part of lib land around seattle.
Now, the sales tax and use tax are steep. 10% +/- and WA is good at trying to collect “use tax”, ie repeat taxation on the same item, on used vehicle and toy purchases. Especially if one doesn’t know the loopholes or has a moral objection to stiffing the state on additional tax….

I registered my first truck in '64. '05 was the first year the plate did not have a number on the plate that showed the maximum GCVW I expected to run. (Or often the weight I expected to pay fine above)
The paperwork still says 12,000 for my 1500 Dodge

Sadly, I pay for weight even on a scooter. My state passed a registration fee cap by voters, so now they just add other fees they claim are not registration but still required to renew tags.
