Northern CA Hwy 1 RV spot and access to it

I have a multi-part query and hope some more seasoned RV'ers can help this newbie.

At least 5 years ago I was driving a full-size van (originating in Seattle are) somewhere in Northern California between Crescent City to San Francisco. I lost my notes from the trip. On Highway 1, driving south, on the right I remember passing a large RV parking area with two or three rows of pull-through parking. It appeared to be on a bluff halfway between the ocean and highway and have almost no amenities except one or two Restroom buildings and a 180 degree panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. I know there are stretches of Hwy 1 that are not recommended for RVs, but this place was quite full with many large rigs when I passed it.

First question: Does anyone know which place I'm referring to?

Second question: I'll be towing a 20' TT with a Ford Expedition. Due to the hairpin turns on Highway 1, can I get there from Crescent City?

Third question: What is a good resource to plan an RV trip and find and reserve ocean-front RV sites down the Oregon/California coast?

Thanks in advance for any help with my learning curve.
  • Ok, I checked out Westport/Union Landing State Beach, but it's not the one I remember. "Travelling" 1.4 miles south on Google Earth, I do see an area that might be the one I'm thinking of. 39 30'9.73N 123 46'54.91W. I believe if you go a 1/4 mile south of it you would be at what used to be a KOA. I'll have to dig out my paper maps and see if I can reconcile Google Earth to landmarks, or maybe GE does it but I don't know how to use it. Thanks to all for your Hwy 1 advice.
  • No problem on US1, just go slow on the 15 MPH northern end hairpins. We took it several times with our 36' with toad.

40+ MH's are prohibited on this and some other CA roads. We can no longer go to Ft Bragg. :(
  • Can't help you with the CG, but as a point of reference for towing. Last summer the wife and I towed our 28' 5'er behind a Ram 2500 CC LB all the way from Crescent City to Ft Bragg. We took Hwy 1 from Leggitt Ca to Ft Bragg. It was definitely curvy in some parts. We are around 45-46' OAL.

I do remember a really cool CG that was right on the beach. You looked down on it when rounding one of the curves up on a bluff. Can't remember the name though.
