Outrageous wipers-Chevy Sonic

Yesterday, had my 2012 Chevy Sonic (great toad) serviced at my favorite Chevy dealer and said to replace wipers. Got the bill-$72 for the pair of wipers and $8 to install. The service guy said I could not return them for a refund if I found cheaper "because they are already on". I found a good pair at an auto parts store and they would install free- total cost $32. Still, Chevy said, sorry, no return but we will give you a free oil change. I said, that's it, won't be back. Comments?

Spoon how am I picking a fight with you? From what I read it sounded to me and at lest one other that you were calling him stupid. If that was not your intention then I apologize.

As for the brake question I just was pointing out that we can no longer just hook a vacuum pump to the bleeder and flush the system out. I learned that on this forum.

I never let a dealer work on any of my vehicles. Warranty is about the only thing I'll let them do and I haven't bought a new vehicle in 30 years or so. The average car dealership doesn't make that much money off a car sold. The service department is what keeps the lights n and pays the mortgage.

I do buy some parts at the dealership but I put them on myself. I've worked on cars and trucks since I was 5, ran my own shop for a few years and still keep my hand in working on my own vehicles. granted, I haven't changed my own oil in 30 years since a friend owns an oil change place and he lets me walk underneath to inspect my under carriage. Plus, I don't have to dispose of waste oil.

Look at the shop rate for work. It's anywhere from $70 and up. high end dealerships charge over $100. Of that, the mechanic might get $20 if he's lucky. I know a bunch of indies who used to work at a dealership but wanted to make a better living.

Some of the dealers around here are pretty good about free advice and such. Others, one in particular, pull the same stunt as the OP got regularly. I bought a 30 year old Buick from an estate recently. Some of the receipts show outrageous prices charged to the elderly woman who used to own the car. The same dealer that did it kept telling my sister there wasn't anything wrong with the ignition on her car. An auto electric shop I finally got her to go to replaced the ignition switch (yes, it's in the recall) and it turned out the GM replacement was bad too. Repeated questions were met with "you'll have to make an appointment and there will be a charge for that".

On wiper blades, I replace mine twice a year. More often if ice damages one in the winter. A really good blade from Autozone runs around $12 and they will put it on if you ask. I save the blades I just took off and toss them in the trunk or behind the seat in case I get a bad one and I then have something to put on.
Honk if you love Jesus.

If you are referring to the Sonic, I think you need to update your knowledge.

The Sonic is assembled here in the good ol USA. (Orion Township Plant, Orion MI.)

My knowledge includes a year and a half of working in the Lake orion Michigan plant where they assembled parts imported from Korea to build the sonic and the Buick Verano. They moved a massive amount of cardboard pallet boxes in every day. All the plastic and most of the small parts were imported. It's been years but if I recall correctly, the optional turbo engine was built in Flint Michigan and some of the sheet metal was stamped at Flint metal fab and welded in our robotic body shop.

The Sonic replaced the unloved Chevy Aveo. The Sonic is a global car, sold in more or less identical forms around the world. GM Korea formerly known as Daewoo.

Spoon you do know that the newer vehicles we can no longer do that right? You now have to cycle the ABS system to flush it now.

Don

You sure do love to pick a fight with me, don't you? Try to just read the words next time, rather than read INTO them...

I haven't had to change the fluid on a "newer" vehicle yet. Anywho... unless you need to cycle the ECM to change the wipers, it still seems stupid to me to pay that much for new wipers.

I Know a lot of people that can't do there own automotive work that I wouldn't call stupid. That is a very rude statment to make.

Don, first of all... he ASKED for people to comment on it.
Second of all I didn't call him stupid, I stated it was stupid not to ask for the price, agree to the service without knowing the price and then come on the internet and ask for comments about it.

There is a HUGE difference between calling someone stupid and pointing out that they did something stupid. I'm sure you've done some stupid stuff in your life... I know for a fact that I have.

How did I change my brake fluid? I bled the brake lines until all the old fluid was out, filling the master cylinder with fresh fluid. How do you change out your brake fluid?

Normally I wouldn't get that personal... but he did ask specifically for comments on the matter.

Check with your State AG Office and see what the max cost for a repair is. In Ohio you have to be given an estimate for any repairs over $50 and you MUST sign it showing they told you of the cost. If they don't the whole repair only costs you $50.

Ha... don't forget that you asked...

I think its stupid to have a dealership replace your wipers. I think its more stupid not to inquire about the price to change those wipers. I think its even more stupid than that to then come on the internet and complain about the stupid thing you just did... like its the DEALERS fault.

My wife's car purchase includes lifetime oil changes, tire rotation, etc. At her last oil change they said her air filter needed replaced at $68, cabin filter at $40 +/-, brake fluid at $99 (that was their SPECIAL), etc etc.

I know an air filter costs about $8... declined that cause I ain't that stupid. Bought my own filter and replaced it for $60 savings.
The cabin filter isn't a necessity and her HVAC has sufficient air flow and wasn't restrictive... declined that cause I ain't that stupid.
Brake fluid was less then 15K miles old (changed it myself) and I could tell that they hadn't even taken the cap of the master cylinder to check it... declined cause I ain't that stupid.

I've listened to them explaining to people all the maintenance that NEEDS to be done and wanted to laugh out loud. I had a service advisor tell my wife that her car NEEDED a fuel injector cleaner for about $100. I asked the guy to please show me where it the manual Toyota recommends this service and at what mileage. Obviously he couldn't because it was a PURE PROFIT upsell item they are told to push. The service advisor didn't realize that I was sitting with my daughter while my wife went to the counter... must have figured she looked dumb enough to agree to something like that.

A fool and his money are easily separated...

BTW GM list is $27 per for the Sonic original equipment wipers, and they also offer a more affordable line at $16.60 per. That dealer smoked the OP.
The manufacturers are helpless to control dealer pricing, but they charge the dealers crazy prices going in so they have gotten their money up front and really don't care.
I would call the general manager or owner if they are onsite. I would also be suspect of any other pricing at that location.

Let me ask you something. What do you do for a living? And what do you charge?
Take an animal to the Vet, then you can cry.
Call the HVAC guy, then you can cry.
Go to the grocery store, then you can cry.
Speed in most any state, then you can howl!
And on and on.
Just the way of the world anymore but yes it does suck.
