Palomino campers

Hello Everyone,

I'm looking for a used camper that will fit an 8' truck bed and came across a used palomino brand 8801. I was wondering if anyone here has one now or has had one in the past and would sure appreciate your opinions, good, bad or whatever.

Thank you
  • Don't forget to measure the length of the dinette bed if you plan to use it. The shorter length was one of the deal-killers for me.
  • I have a 2008 model. The 8801 is a Palomino Maverick. They were made by Forest River, 9.5 feet long. Set up for either a short box or long box. Your looking at about 2,000 pounds dry.

Mine is wood frame, came with 16 pound horizontal propane tanks.

I converted to regular 20lb BBQ tanks that I can swap at Walmart in a pinch. The horizontal tanks were a pain. I added some 90 degree elbows under the sink and made some storage space. Knocked out the upper cabinet pane and added a 3rd door. Shower is really tight, waste tanks are small.

As far as RV's go, I'm pretty satisfied.
  • Oh my! - I think I'm gonna miss the basement cargo areas of my Class C....LOL!!!
  • Interior Storage and Palomino Bronco are mutually exclusive terms... It's my main complaint about the camper.

All my cabinets are full and I think I could fit it all in a single copier paper box if I had to move out... and I have the 1500 model.
  • Well, they must be popular around these parts because the one I was stalking (a creampuff '97 Bronco 1200) got sold...LOL! Or at least there was a verbal commitment, and the owner called us and said it was "spoken for". We said if the deal fell through - to call us :-)

The search continues and we're open to any brand - it just looked like the Palomino has so much more interior storage, than say, the Skamper that's also advertised with a similar size and floorplan.
  • Yup, it's all about the maintenance and storage of the camper once it's out of warranty.

If the camper is several years old and in excellent shape, it is not going to suddenly explode into a slobbering moldy monster overnight just because it is some "off" brand like Palomino. As long as you keep it clean, and keep it weather-tight you will not have a problem with it.

After that, it's all about whether you like the layout and spaces available.
  • I considered them, the price was nice but the tanks were too small. They're not knows as the highest end unit, but neither is my Adventurer but I'm happy with it.
  • I had an '03. I bought it knowing I had to work on it. Replaced the roof, skirts and front cap. I like the way it was constructed. Stress skin panel on aluminum frame side walls. It was easy to repair even with major leaks issues and could not tell where the repairs were unless I pointed them out.

Issues were caused by lack of maintenance by previous owner.

    Pros:
Couldn't tell it was on the truck. 2300 lbs. on 2500HD.

    Cons:
Tanks too small (7 black and 8 grey).
Distance from bed to step to floor too long(No basement). Wife was sure she would fall and break something. She wouldn't accept the fact that she was the problem with short legs.

It was a good little economical camper. And I love the wife so I sold it as directed and got one that she approved of.

Yes, If the wife weren't going along I would buy another.
