Picked up new (to me) Host Everest

My tow vehicle is a F350 DRW 4x4 Crewcab Lariat w/ 6.2 gasoline engine with a payload rating of 5000+ lbs. With the exception of upper (a7200) Torklift Stabeloads, my suspension is stock.

I previously had a Host Tahoe 1050 DS on there which clocked in at approximately 4000 lbs. and it handled great so I was comfortable with moving up to a larger camper. One thing I am grateful for is that the two primary campgrounds I use throughout the year offer fresh water fill up as you pull into the campground loops so I can make the drive down with the tanks empty which saves a ton of weight.

I was actually going to order a new Host Mammoth or a Chalet TS116 but I had some gentlemen locally back out on buying my camper at the last second and he royally screwed up the deal I had set in place to purchase a new one. So after a delay in selling my Host Tahoe, there was a pre-owned Everest for sale here in Alaska that I jumped on. I had to drive from Anchorage to Fairbanks (400 miles) to pick it up but it is *EXTREMELY* difficult to find a quality pre-owned truck camper here in Alaska so I bit the bullet and committed to drive down and purchase.

The exterior looks very similar to my Tahoe (which was an 07, this Everest is an 08). When I stepped inside I was blown away by how absolutely massive it is. It is more like a class C RV than a truck camper. Love the side entry door. My first TC was a Lance 1161 with the side door and then I went to the Tahoe which had the traditional rear door which I did not like.

I was very impressed by the basement storage. With my Tahoe when I went camping the back seat of my truck was full with extra gas cans, my Yamaha generator and miscellaneous fishing supplies. Now, I can put it all inside the sliding basement storage compartment and keep my leather interior clean. The one thing I did not like was discovering the black locking latches on the basement storage compartments use the evil CH751 lock (whoever invented the CH751 needs to die a slow and painful death). Any Host owners out there replaced these locks? I am going to try and swing by a locksmith and see if I can get these re-keyed just to have a bit more security.

I drove 400 miles back home with the camper and it handled fine. Was able to put the cruise control at 65 mph, lock out 6th gear and drive home comfortably. Left to right it is level, but front to back it does have some squat. Local shop quoted me 810 bucks for a complete air bag system inclusive of parts and labor. I am thinking of doing the Timbren SES and Torklift lower stableloads first before bagging the suspension. Like I say, it handles fine, all I'm looking for is maybe a reduction of 2-3 inches in the rear sag and I'd be happy. From what I've read the Timbren SES will do this. Will probably order this week.

One more thing, the guy I bought it from was carrying the camper on.......... a SRW........ F250!!!!!!! He had about every suspension mod imaginable but I still found the fact that he had it on a 3/4 ton amazing (he told me he didn't feel comfortable going more than 35 mph down the road though....) I guess he bought the camper intending to upgrade to a one-ton DRW down the road, but circumstances forced the sale of the camper. He sold it to me below low-book value so I was appreciative of the deal he gave me since it was barely used and is as-new on the inside and out. Still need to dewinterize it (you can see a bit of anti-freeze in the shower there) I can't wait to Memorial Day to go out King Salmon fishing and break her in. Hopefully I'll have the suspension dialed in by then.

I tow my 20' jet boat with mine, it weighs about 4000lbs including the trailer.
The only problem with this is the length of the boat and truck camper, I think I am over 50'.
I am maxed out on GVWR with the boat. My total weight with bat is 18,200.
I added a front hitch to take a little weight off the rear axle.
Front axle is 4850, rear axle is 9000, carry about 30 gallons of water.
Without the boat the camper/truck is much easier to get around.
With a North-South bed, they must have done away with the huge wardrobe in the front and moved it to the side.
I think the wardrobe will hold all the clothes I own, I don't need that much space.
Mine came with an 26" LED TV, that runs off of AC or DC, and has a built in DVD.I usually run the TV and Blu-ray off a 1500 watt inverter that Host installed in the basement.
Yes, I like the jacks, they came with a wireless remote and a wired remote that has a jack in generator compartment.
The only real problem I have had that wasn't self inflicted was I tore off the awning switch when pulling in the rear slide.
I put that slide in at least 50 times with no problem, but once I was off kilter a little and the slide wobbled a little at the wrong time and hit the awning switch.
If you notice, the clearance between the valance and the switch is only 1/4" as the valance passes the switch. Host is going to off set the valance to the other side when I stop by this June.
If I had it to do over again, I would not get the awning. I have never used it it 3 years. I have extended it a couple of times at home, just to see if it works.

Yea not sure if I could tow because of the length. I used to haul a smaller (32') 5th wheel and hated parking it. Most of our state campgrounds here are single lane loops and it is absolute hell trying to navigate them with a long tow rig. That's one of the reasons I switched over to the TC. I can park anywhere, I love it!

Just put in the 24" LCD a few minutes ago. Has a built in DVD player works great. I had this model in a 15" in the small bedroom shelf in my 5th wheel and liked it because it can play media (.avi/.mkv etc...) from SD memory cards so I can load up a bunch of TV shows on a 64 GB SDXC card and don't have to bring a stack of DVDs. Direct 12V plugin, no need to run the inverter. Ran a 32" Vizio in my Tahoe running off the 1000w inverter, but sadly that wouldn't swivel out to be viewable from the area due to lack of space in the Everest (width between the fridge and bathroom wall is too small). I think I have an extra VESA 100 mount laying around, may try to add another TV by the thermostat, I see alot of the newer hosts have one mounted here, though I think 2 TV's in a TC's might be overkill.

Awnings....... This is my 6th RV, I have *NEVER* used the awning in any of them. Most of that was due to the hassle of putting it in or out depending on the weather. However, this will be my first camper with the electric awning which makes putting it in or out very quick so I may actually use it now....... or maybe not, was never really a big fan of them.

Replacement CH571 locks

I just ordered a bunch of these for my Host Mammoth - they fit perfectly EXCEPT for the water door.

Now, I have one key for all the doors, and they also have in stock keys with LEDS!

Does your Mammoth have the black latch type locking mechanism? I'm going to go out later and see if I can somehow just get the ch751 lock out and replace with a different tubular cam lock.

Alas, no. The doors are insulated on the Mammoth, and therefor different. It came with the el-cheapo ch571's, and I really justed wanted one key for all of it (and yes, I know about the fact that a master key - a screwdriver - can open anything.)

Thanks for the comments. Not really planning on towing myself at the moment (gave away my super hitch extension when I sold my Tahoe). I think I'd want an F-450/550 to haul a heavy camper like this and tow simultaneously.

Found a replacement latch on ebay! Don't know if it has the CH751 standard key or a different key, waiting for reply from seller before ordering.

EDIT: I'm seeing quite a few of the same locking and non-locking style latches by a company called "Southco". Going through all of them seeing if any of them have a key other than the ch751....

EDIT x 2: Argh, looks like all the Southco C5 latches are keyed alike CH751......

Thanks for all the comments guys, can't wait to take her out for a shakedown trip. Doing the first mod today, replacing the 19" ancient TV in there with a 24" 1080p LED-LCD 12 volt TV. I wanted to use the 32" Vizio Razor LED I had in my Tahoe but it's too large to swivel out for viewing from the bedroom to living room area.

The shower doesn't have a curtain, it is a plastic sliding door than runs in tracks on the tub and the frame on top.
Your generator, outside shower door is shaped much differently, mine is square.
My jack are different, I have 2500lb Reico-Titans that look like they have a larger motor on top.
My thermostat is a digital one.

I've seen some variations and changes in the Everest campers as well. There is an 08 Everest on rvtrader right now (see picture below) that has the propane tanks in a pullout tray on the passenger side of the camper in the kitchen slide. Mine is in the rightmost basement storage compartment at the back of the camper. Also this one on rvtrader has a north/south bed instead of an east/west. This is the first time I've seen a north/south bed on an Everest.

I think these differences we are seeing is a result of many of Host's campers being built to order with the customer being able to highly customize the build, adding or changing things as they see fit during the build. I'm jealous of the Reico titan jacks though, wish I ahd those on mine.

Hope you have many fun times in your new Host. My first TC was going to be a Host Everest. Was already to place the order until the dealer talked me out of it. Tried to lean me towards a new Chalet. Chalets were just coming out and I never buy the first year of anything. Later on Host dropped a bunch of their dealers and started selling factory direct. After going thru that roller coaster ride with that dealer I bought a new AF TC from a different dealer.

My 2012 Everest doesn't have those locks on the basement or any of the other compartments.
Mine came with 2 locks on the basement door. My locks look similar to the locks in the picture above.Your basement door looks a lot different than mine.
I tore my basement door off when the camper was new and a new one was only $125 including installation by Host at the factory.
Mine also doesn't have the two vents coming out of the tub/shower, the vents are in the wall.

Your jam but is loose. Once the bolt is set for the proper clamping pressure, the jam nut should be tightened to maintain that setting.

Thank you for that information. I have a dune buggy with a storage compartment using those latches. I have wanted to make that a locking "glove box" and now may have a source.
