Propane and Safe Alert

We're camping with some propane smell coming from the kitchen. The gas CO by Safe Alert will blast a siren occasionaly. It is a little windy. How much propane smell should I expect, if any?

Blowoff from what? There is no blowoff. Even if the tank was overfilled, it's a closed system except for the regulator vent which may occasionally vent a very small amount of gas, but that's outside and under a cover and you would never smell it in the trailer.
A 20 pound tank should only be filled to 80 percent of capacity by law. Overfill it, leave it in the sun, the pressure safety valve is going to open and blow off gas (which you are referring to as venting a small amount). Apparently you have never seen a tank overfilled sitting in the sun.

Maybe you could remove the arrogance from your posts. I guess we are not all as smart as you think you are.

    Have a nice day.

  • Spraying soapy water really does show where the propane is leaking. Glad its fixed.
  • Dumb, Dumb, Dumb. We finally took our trailer in for the propane leak. After the trailer was inspected and tested, the dealer found that the last person that filled our propane tank didn't screw the cap on straight. That is why when it was windy we smelled propane. We finally got to the second tank and that is when the problem began. I'm relieved that there wasn't anything expensive found, but mad at myself for accepting the work of others as aways correct.
  • Home tanks will blow off if over filled. This happens in the summer a lot when the propane expands and causes the relief valve to open. I've never heard of a small propane tank blowing off. And, if it did it would be outside.

  • Thanks everyone for your comments. We did use the propane sparingly with windows and door open, but turned off at the tank at night. We're home now and made an appointment with the dealer for next monday.
  • Are all the stove burners and oven pilot light "off?"
And no, you shouldn't smell any propane.
  • I think you mean a Safe-T-Alert Combination Carbon Monoxide and Gas Alarm. I agree with MKirkland, you should not smell any propane gas. There is a chance that the tank was over filled and you are smelling the blowoff.

Use a spray bottle filled with soapy water and see if you can find a joint that is leaking. Spray each joint and look for bubbles. If you can't find the leak, either take the RV to a place that installs propane tanks or a RV dealer with a propane sniffer. While you are waiting to get the RV in for service, turn off the propane at the tank.

IMHO, whatever you do, don't ignore it. Find the source and resolve the issue.

  • Your nose and your alarm is telling you that there is a leak. Turn off your propane tank and don't use it again until it is checked out.
