Propane leak... Help!

First, let me say hi! I'm new to the forum but I've browsed a lot.

I've been living in my camper (2004 Coachmen Spirit of America) for about a year and it is parked in my parents drive way. That being said, I still consider myself to be a newbie.

About two weeks ago, I walked outside to go into the camper, and I smelled propane at the end, towards the refrigerator. When I opened the door to go inside, the reek of propane almost knocked me down. I thought maybe the propane had simply run out and I needed to replace the canister but the refrigerator light said it was ok. I couldn't find any leaks but I ended up having to sleep in the house because it made me sick.

I can only assume that the leak is coming from the refrigerator. I did notice that the fridge itself wasn't cold, and I wasn't running either the stove or the furnace. I just turned off the main propane supply and have basically gone without, but it's high time I get this sorted out.

I turned the main propane supply back on and then the refrigerator, which came on with no problems. I let it run for 15 minutes and checked the panel outside. I could hear the pilot light burning, but to my surprise I could see smoke coming from the top of the pilot box. Is that normal? Is there a way for me to check for leaks? I'd really like to be able to use my refrigerator, and having the furnace back occasionally would be nice as well. I've never had any problem with the propane at all, so I really don't know what to do.

I apologize if this is a simple fix, but I'm really ignorant when it comes to this type of thing. I am learning as I go though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

This should be what your rig looks like.Spirit of America
The battery should be located on the tongue of the rig. If there is no battery make sure the positive lead is insulated from ground.
Check for make and model of the refer. It could have a manual valve to switch from gas to electric. It could be leaking.
Gas leak can be very dangerous. Turn it off until problem is resolved.

Thanks for the response!

I'm plugged into the electricity to the house, though. I don't even know if I have a battery.

An over charged and boiled dry battery smells a lot like propane. Might want to see if it(they) have water in them.

Smoke is not normal. However, if it's been a while since the refer ran on gas there could be a small amount of foreign material (dust, oil, bugs etc.) in the burner area that burned off.
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
