Not picking on you Jerry, but if the posted photo is your window the notch we are referring to is there on the bottom of the red handle. Here's your picture with an arrow pointing to the notch.
You just open the window and let the notch in the bottom of the handle lock onto the window frame. I do like your pin idea to keep it closed. There's no chance it's going to accidentally pop open that way. :)
