Putty?

I'm changing one of the outside lights on my trailer for an LED unit (the original had broken). What is the putty stuff that is between the light and the trailer? I'm sure it's helpful in keeping water out, but not sure what I need to get? Also, do i use dicor along the edge or something else?

Thanks! I'm sure I've looked right past it all this time.

I looked for the 'putty/butyl tape' at Lowes when I did a rebuild on my last camper. They didn't have it at the time. All I ever found was normal weather stripping that you would use around the house.I had to go the the RV store, maybe something has changed.

What section of the store do you find it in? I've never seen it art Home Depot or Lowes, but then again I haven't looked. I usually just order online, but it would be nice to pick it up locally.

I am with 4x4Dodger. Just because it on an RV does not mean that it has to be from an RV store. Other than the self leveling Dicor sealant (Lowe's didn't know what I was talking about), I try not to buy from my local RV shop.

No, No, NO You do not need to go to an overpriced RV store.

I found that putty tape turns black within days and you can't clean it off and it looks terrible. I used it to replace the water drain and am really sorry I did.

If you are looking for a putty tape, it is called butyl putty. Very inexpensive. I have always bought mine online. Not sure if this is what you are referring to or not.

Thanks all!! I appreciate the help! Now will head to the hardware store and pickup the needed item. And will check my "weep" holes!

I was checking things around one of my two outside scare lights and noticed it had a wep hole in the lens. I looked at the other one and the wep hole was on top and the inside area was half full of water up to where the wiring came inside the trailer. I have been noticing some water inside one of my high mounted cabinets...

Good catch on my part. Rotated the lens to get the wep hole on the bottom and that solved my water problem..

Be sure to check your outside lens for a wep hole and make sure it goes back on the bottom after you take it out... The smaller outside porch lights may not have one...

The putty tape is available in rolls. The butyl tape which is also available in rolls is far superior.
