Anyone ever hear of a turbo getting ("coked up" dealer term)?
I lost a lot of power and massive drop in MPG while towing to Co.
Took truck 2012 3500 drw dodge to dealer and they had it for 3 days.
They say they flushed the turbo and it runs fine now.
How can this be prevented in the future and what causes this issue?

Any thoughts?

I work for Comcast here in Utah and all of our bucket trucks are F450 gassers. It has been that way for a long time.

In my area fleets are gong CNG or lpg. Garbage has been that way for a long time. Busses also. At Frito Lay I installed a deluge sprinkler system for their LPG filling station in the 80's.

I don't know if there is a connection but the CNG/LPG Garbage and Busses are much quieter than before.

I am seeing electric Fed EX and some of the others. Seems they are trying out those and CNG and LPG.

I believe the local delivery trucks are gas or propane.

Every UPS truck I see around here sounds like a 12v Cummins under the dog house. I think city buses, garbage trucks, fire trucks, amberlampses, construction equipment and dump trucks are pretty much diesel.
Our local power company has been putting gas powered medium duty utility trucks in their fleet for a few years now. Probably due to the problems spelled out here. I wouldn't want a truck that requires a 30-60 minute interstate ride to nowhere once a week just so it will run right. Corporate bean counters definitely don't want it. That would easily eat up the small difference in fuel mileage. Extra wear on tires, shocks and everything else. And drive it like you stole it? I prefer to drive normally with the flow of traffic. I enjoyed my diesels when I had them but, I don't miss them.

Had that TSB done years ago. No effect. The problem only occurs when EB or T/H is on. I've talked to others with the same issue and no resolve as well. I just don't use EB in town any more.

Two very different things are being discussed here...
"Coking" is caused by shutting down a turbo (gas or diesel) that is extremely hot and has not been allowed to cool. When this happens the oil inside the turbo's oil gallery is heated to the point it turns to a solid. This blocks off further flow resulting in a damaged bearing and poor turbo action.
It has nothing to do with short trips, not driving it hard enough, too hard or anything but hot shut down. It also has nothing to do with carbon build up inside the turbo. That is a totally different subject.

It is certainly not a "Dodge" or Cummins thing. In fact it is extremely rare in those.

AFAIK the above post has the correct information and correctly points out what the many other "INCORRECT" descriptions and causes of "coking" the oil in the turbo.

Also I might not be 100% correct, but with modern day oils it's much harder to coke the oil in the turbo unless you have really got that turbo sizzling hot and immediately shut it down.

Programming issue........have you had it into a dealer, explained it and had a 'reflash' done?

Yes, many times to several dealers. Did not help. Again, numerous others on various forums have reported the same issue with no resolve.

putting a smilie face between sentences is any better? when I signed onto RV.NET, it said nothing about using proper grammar or spelling. and in your defence, it also says nothing about being truthful either... So...does your mom know you're here on the interweb and at this hour?

I just drove my 12 Ram CTD to the store to get some Coke. Will that hurt it?

Depends... if you didn't pay for your "coke", the dealer may have something to say about it... or if the cops get you first! 😉

I ran Power Service silver bottle ever since I purchased my 05 Dodge, and at 112,000 my injectors were still flowing 97% per dealer's inspection . Most of the PS is acetone, good cleaner. Also idled super smooth, just like new.

If that is all you do with your truck, it will. Think of it like eating a big juicy greasy piece of meat - Once in a while will not kill you, but a constant diet of this will.
