R-Pod, Jayco Hummingbird or Winnie Drop

We know the floorplan we want, and we know we want one of these, but which brand?

What we are the most concerned about is quality in how they are built and a couple of questions for owners.

The original, the R-pod Hood River built by Forest River had a really good reputation, but we are reading that quality has gone down with popularity, including things like the holding tanks falling off and the cheap off-road tires blowing out. We do want the higher clearance with the 15 inch tires.

Can't find much in the way of reviews about the Jayco Hummingbird, but they have an awning. They also have the Baja edition with the higher clearance and off road tires.

Can't find much in the way of reviews about the Winnie Drop. It also has an awning, but have not found out yet if they offer the higher clearance.

So, please, we are looking for personal experiences.

THANKS
  • Bought a 17RK Hummingbird in Jan. Have traveled to Phoenix (about 130 mi each way) three times with it thus far....the trailer is currently sitting at the dealership's service department. It has been there for two weeks so far.

The dealer (Little Dealer Little Prices) was great and gave us excellent treatment during and after the sale. The problem in the camper. Some of the trim is falling down where they drove the nails in with too much power on the nailgun and it the nails must have gone right through. The radio did NOT have the necessary cords attached to the back to view movies on our tv from the radio. There are numerous issues with poor workmanship on the camper. The final straw was when the toilet became unseated and leaked water/sewage from the bottom! NOW, I have camped before in used campers - this is our first new one! We expect to have problems and I have fixed many minor ones in a used camper. We DO NOT expect these types of problems with a brand new camper!

We will wait and see what happens with the dealer's repairs (emailed progress update and was told they are awaiting trim pieces from Jayco) before we check into AZ lemon laws! Buyer Beware!
  • Thanks scbwr for more feedback. We will definitely keep doing more research.
  • I follow as much as I can about the Winnebago towables and owners are very happy with them. Any problems have usually been small things. So, I would encourage you to check out the drop and have a point of comparison with the Jayco. When we bought our Winnebago, we were considering a Jayco trailer, but Jayco really didn't have anything to compete with the Winnebago 2201 DS and the outside kitchen is something we really wanted.
  • The models we are looking at have a dry bath, the R-pod 180 and the others are the same. The awning is not that important as we rarely use the one on our camper, but it is standard with the Hummingbird and the Winnie drop. I will check out the ascend.

I forgot that Jayco has the two year deal and I like that. It is down to which company has the best record for quality.

    I appreciate the feedback. Thanks
  • Sounds as though the Jayco with the Baja package would be the best of the three. I don't believe Winnebago offers a higher clearance option. And, Jayco does have the two year warranty. We've been real happy with our Winnebago, but you need to go with what will meet your needs.
  • why the concern about the awning. can't you add that to all of them? I was not impressed with R pods myself. the drop looks to me alot like the Rpod I was looking at. bed wall to wall to wall however, tiny triangular sink in wet bath with no vanity. check out Ascend 17RD.
