I started driving in the late 50's so I grew up with the muscle cars of the 60's and 70's. I never had a true muscle car but did have some big V8's. Back then you either had a stick or a 3 speed automatic. With the automatic I remember, and a few tickets to prove it, that when you hit passing gear it would set you back in the seat. I've even chirped a tire in passing gear once in a while. What has this got to do with today and this tow vehicle forum is this. (now get ready you dodge and gm guys) I have a new ford 6.2 gasser with a 6 speed. When I hit passing gear, the engine roars, the tach soars and the truck moves just a little faster, I swear it even slows down before it picks up speed. I think it these trannys with all the gears to choose from. Maybe better for mpg but forget about getting thru the yellow light in a hurry. The higher the gear you are in the more you notice this. Am I the only one to notice or care about this? I like to take off when I put my foot in it and not just hear a roar.

Not what happens with the 6.7. Stomp on the peddle and it goes

My 6.6 Duramax will put you back in your seat when you hit the go pedal, takes only a second to down shift and the turbo spools up. Its more fun than my old 5.3 gasser.

My 5.9 will point you at the ditch at 55 on a damp road.

I have both the 6.7 and the 6.2. You are correct. It does sort of seem the truck has to think real quick "which gear do I pick?" when you stomp it. But when it gets it, it goes. The 6.2 by itself is a good engine. I did have to reprogram it and that has helped a little bit. But the reason I bought my 6.7 was I was just so tired of towing the camper with the 6.2.

It's not the gears or the tranny or the engine. It's power management. In the old days when you stomped on the right peddle it snapped the butterfly open......NOW!!!Now days when you stomp on the right peddle a signal goes to the puter which says, Oh I can't open too fast or the tires will lose traction and that would be bad.Want it to open like the old days? Get a tuner and tune the lag out. You will have waaaaaaaaaaaaay more power than the "old days ever had."

I've seen a comment from a Ford Engineer that if you turn off traction control the 6.7 will leave rubber on the road. I don't know if the 6.2 has traction control

yea, I kind of remember a couple drag races with my 1955 Pontiac! That was a CAR! (and I lost!)

Yeah, I remember when! I had a 71 Challenger with no AC, 4-wheel non-powered drum brakes. I had to STAND on those puppies sometimes to get it to stop. Loved the car, though, I sure wish I still had it.

There is no such thing as "passing gear." In the 3 speed automatic, the transmission merely downshifted to 2nd gear. Today, with the multiple even 6 geared transmissions, a downshift is not nearly dramatic, as there is not that much difference in the gearing ratios from one gear to the next.
