Rusty Rims

We have an old horse trailer sitting out back that is no longer mobile, just being used as a storage pod. The steel wheels have gotten so rusty, I am fairly sure it has affected the integrity of them. In other words, I question their safety. That would be my concern of just "covering them up with a wheel cover".
Maybe it's just me, but I would pull them off, sandblast , inspect and paint them.

Ther is a big difference in a trailer siting out back for storage and a little surface rust. Sand blast and paint or cover op as u please.

Sadly, the wheel manufacturers don't apply paint very well to these types of wheels. My camper, which I bought brand new, already had surface rust on the spare wheel when I brought it home. As I am sure you can guess, I painted it properly.
Not trying to pick an argument, but surface rust left alone becomes a deeper problem ( Cor Ten excluded ).
But then again, I am retired, and I love tinkering with stuff, so that's part of my reasoning for fixing stuff like this. What the heck, I have a seven year old truck that still looks new, because I waste way too much time washing and waxing :B
There is no rust on my Nissan, and if it gets any, it's going to the body shop ;)

Here on the West Coast we have Les Schwab tire centers that will strip and powder coat both sides of a wheel for $25 /wheel. They have multiple colors (incl white) and the finish is shiny and much more durable than the original paint.
I had four rusty wheels for a vintage car redone and they look great.
Maybe you could find someplace in your area to do the same.

Man, that is cheap for powder coating rims. I wish we had LS around here.

Unless they are special wheels, I usually will buy new ones made out of aluminum. The end of the rust issue.

get some chrome trim rings , they are cheap , and they will dress it up a bit. Look at pep boys

I just hit mine with a wire brush, spray painted them black with Rust-Oleumn paint, and installed new chrome center hub covers. It's been 2 years now and the rust has not come back. If it does I'll just do it again.

There is also a product called POR-15 that was made to paint navy ships. It's kinda expensive but once you paint it on metal it stops rust permanently. Then you can paint over it with any other color you like if you wish.

WOW! That is cheap ... Anyone know of any places on East Coast that can match that price?
