Seasonal question for weekenders. how far is your campsite

Im in my second year of camping with my TT. Last summer got real fed up with weekend camping with the camper with towing on a Friday evening, arriving late to the campground setting up, and then leaving early sunday morning.. it go so frustrating that I stopped camping in mid august because of all the hassle.. So this summer my family is considering trying seasonal. im in the Adirondacks of NYS. most campgrounds charge around 1500-2000 per season. I think this might be better for my family as I can leave work on a Friday night and not worry about towing and setup.. and then we can leave when we want on sunday.. Plus probably cheaper in the long run with less gas..
My main question is, how far do some of you travel to your seasonal sites? I found some seasonals around Lake George, which is around 45 minutes from me, but a lot of those sites look very busy, I found some campgrounds more north around the lake champlain area.. from pictures and reviews they look less busy then lake George.. but, would be around 2 hours one way for me. Im not sure if that's too far for the weekender or not.. im sorry, im very new to this. We took loan out for camper last year, and then we took a huge paycut right after, arghhhh. so I have to also be budget conscious. I found a campground by lake champlain only $850.00 per season.
I also have to find a place that my 7 yo daughter will have fun at.. so would like to find place that atleast has a pool for her.... I thank everyone for reading.. I am also posting this in the general rv board as im not sure where this should go..thanks
  • Several years ago we did this. Had the TT in the same park in the same space May 1st through Labor Day. 50 miles from the S&B. I was fortunate to have most of the summer away from my job and DH commuted a lot...but had some week long stretches and many 4 day weekends. Our kids loved it.

It was still close enough for friends and relatives to drive up and spend the day enjoying the lake or fishing or celebrating a birthday. My kids still say it was some of the best summers of their lives.

We did this for 4 years. Great memories Pricele$$

That what we do around here with our favorite close by camp sites being from 50-100 miles out. If we go to the longer distance one we used to run into the same situation as you described.

Now we are not so much required to be anywhere at a specific time being retired. My OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer will stay functional off the power grid for a good 12-14 days with re-charging my batteries every day with a three hour generator run time. After 14 days I need to recharge my batteries for a good 12-14 hours or do damage to my batteries which takes more time allowed to run my generator setup so that is when we usually head for the barn. I suspect we will have a few of these more lengthy camping trips coming up this season...

Have never considered a seasonal camp site. Still like to roam around the not so far away country side searching the different camping sites.

  • Ours is 1.5 hours...I would never go more than 2 hours one way.

We have friends with cabins that are 5 hours away in Northern Wi and I have to listen to the moan how far it is.

What's nice if it is around 2 hours, it's short enough to make a day trip out of it.
  • We used to camp with kids and I feel your pain. We started out camping holidays as that made for a weekend with kids out of school. For me, sitting down in one place is just not gonna happen(for awhile I hope). I sat down and did some math, and my fees camping for the year didn't match or exceed what a permanent site would cost(including gas). What we like to do is take a Friday as a vacay day and some weekends a Monday also so we don't have the stress of rushing around. This may work well for you in the summer when kids are out of school. Remember also that you may not be able to make it every weekend as I'm sure there will be those 'honey do lists' to take care of:) And don't forget kid activities with school, scouts or whatever they may be involved in that will take away from your time to get to the campground every week.

Yeah...some of the sites closer to home are busier, it's much easier for a quick weekend trip, and I know some that travel 2 hrs. Sit down and decide how much you want/are able to do and work it from there.Make your reservations early and make a couple long weekends in there also.
