I know it has always been the law but I don't know of a single person that actually gets it renewed annually. Texas changed the law to require an inspection before you can get your vehicle registration. While the police may have ignored trailer inspections, I know they keep an eye on registrations. This mainly affects those of us with Travel Trailers and 5th Wheels. Popups are most likely exempt because they are under 4500 pounds and all the motorhomes were probably already getting inspected. Here in VT every trailer needs to be inspected. The odd thing is that it's opposite of Texas in that you must show proof of registration to get an inspection sticker.

I actually know a lot of people who have had their 5ers and TT inspected annually. Most do it once a year when they have their axles repacked or brakes checked.Almost all RV dealers and RV repair places can do it quickly and easily. The change in the law is an attempt to force automobiles and trucks to be inspected before the registration can be renewed.Motorhomes and trailers (and motorcycles) are just being collected up in the same law. Whatever happened to that "stubbornly independent" way of life in the Lone Star State? Not getting to be like California, are you? ;) We used to have vehicle inspections in OK, but we did away with them; no trailer inspections, either.

In Michigan our trailers have no inspections, ever. Our license plates are permanent, no annual renewal fees.

The Texas inspection is such a joke. It always has been, and it always will be. Gosh I can't even get started on this topic without wanting to go on a rant.Just another worthless tax.

The inspection for trailers in Texas is not new. I had to get my trailer inspected when it was new in 2011 and have done so every year. Also, weights under 4500# do not require inspection as you state. I did have to show my tow vehicle proof of insurance. The tech also drove the truck and trailer down the road. He was gone for about 10 minutes. I was beginning to think it was a scam LOL.

Not really, they have been required for years, but no one paid attention. My trailer is 12 years old and only been inspected once.

I just renewed my tags here in Tennessee, $14.75. Tags are not required for boat trailers, small trailers, etc. I feel safe with a tag on the rear. On my small two wheel trailer tags are not required. I bought it at TSC and went to get the title changed to my name....then they said...if you do that, then you are going to have to tag it. Some inspections are good...what if your trailer was stolen and someone else had to get it inspected?

Here in PA, the land of taxes, I pay $154 tv registration, $40 for tv inspection and emmisions test, trailer reg. is $12/yr and $30 inspection. So, like $235/year!!! Boy, are we safe, though! And poor!

Then there's insurance.....

Same in Ontario.

Our passenger vehicles (personal, not commercial) only need inspection every time they are sold. Emission testing done every 2 years in some areas, but not all parts of Ontario.

Or Oklahoma where my state income tax would be about $33 on my pension over $12,000 - my TV tags would be $91 per year.

It cost me 12 dollars a year to put tabs on my TT in MN and there is no inspection.

That's what I was thinking. No inspection for trailers in MN.

Texas has a lot of residents who travel outside the state for extended periods of time in RVs. I'm told by people in the vehicle registration offices in Collin and Hunt county - the number of oil field and construction workers traveling in RVs outside the state exceeds the 'regular' recreational RV registrations by almost three to one.
