Torklift 21" extension with Lance 865?

Does anyone know if a 21" extension is long enough for a Lance 865 on a short box Ram? Going to AZ to pick up the new camper and thinking about taking a new cargo trailer. Don't really want to show up empty handed. Would rather try to figure it out before I go.
  • Just in case anyone searchws this topic in the future 2015 ram short box with Lance 865 best fit is a 24" torklift extension. In regards to reducing the length of a longer forklift extension by cutting it IMO should not me taken under consideration after seeing the design first hand.
  • I also would go with the longer, easier 2 shorten if needed & I assume cheaper than replacing if too short. Some box trailers are a bit short in the tongue for the box width as far as turning in my opinion.
I had measured ours with camper off, ended up too long and also cut it shorter. Because the Torklift Superhitch dual tubes fit so nice (and figured Id screw up relationship of holes when redrilling), I removed the chain plate and reinforcing ring and cut that end of tubes. Only one hole to mis-drill..

Other consideration is elevation & extension between plugged in ball mount and camper bumper- our trucks a bit tall so Im using straight or drop so was able to shorten T/L stinger flush to camper bumper. But its just a lot easier to 'see' where you really want/need it with the camper on hand-so again I'd go long.
  • I would go with the 24"
    The 865 is 7" longer than the 815. 8'7" vs 8'
also, the Ram has one of the shorter SB at only 6'4".
  • The Reese 45292 hitch extension is 34 inches long and is made so you can cut off the end and have a 24" long extension. Or if you don't mind drilling new holes for the pin you can make it an intermediate length. Cost is a little over $200 plus shipping. It includes loops for the safety chains on the trailer so they do not need to be lengthened.
  • If you buy one too long, you can have it cut (with chop or band saw) and re-drilled for the length you want. Did that with mine. Any machine shop (or farm) can do it quickly. Just make sure the hole is located correctly.
  • According to Torklift's site, the 21" & the 24" SuperTruss extensions are rated the same. I would go with the 24", just to "future-proof" your rig.
You will or should get used to not barking your shins. The extra length might come in handy for clearing your trailer.
You don't want to have to buy the 2nd, longer extension if you don't have to.
  • I got a 24" for my short bed F250 w/Lance 845 and sort wish I'd gone a bit shorter. Still pulls fine and I'm not running that heavy anyway. But... the end of the receiver tube sticks 3" out past the TC bumper, just enough to catch my shins. I use a B&W Tow & Stow ball which adds an inch or two more so I could have gotten by with the shorter one. If you use or plan to use an equalizer hitch that adds length as well.
  • If you have powered jacks, you may want to push the trailer a little farther back from your camper. This will depend on your trailer tongue length. I have a 24" SuperTruss with my AF811 (9' floor) which was sized for the Ford 6.75' short bed. The worst case is going up or down a driveway dip while making a sharp right.
  • Should be. I have an 815 and I measured 21" as enough. Still undecided as to whether I intend to buy a 21 or a 24 for mine. As far as I know, the 865 is the same length as my 815 and it's mounted on my 2005 Ram 3500 shortbox.
