I didn't realize they came with 2 transfer cases. All the units I saw had the same control. In fact the 2011 Silverado 1500 has the same controller. The bible is the owner's manual or something in writing from GM. I'd think the manual was easier though.(LOL)
Actually there were 6 different transfer cases in the GM lineup for the 05 model year. 5 of them were flat towable, with only 1 unable to be towed and it was in a W/T model.

    ditto X2.

The owners manual will tell you exactly how the vehicle has to be towed.

Look up recreational towing in the index. It will show you everything you need to know if it is towable 4 down or not and how.

Some year vehicles had changes made mid year. The car I tow did and what I have to do to tow four down differs from others. Trans' aren't cheap be safe and read the manual before you hook up. Good Luck!

  • Did the GM HD pickups come with the transfer case that allowed the neutral function? I know that the 05/06 1/2 tons offered two transfer cases and it seems to me that the one didn't have the neutral function. Or was that it just didn't have the auto feature?
  • Don't depend on any comments from here. Read the owners manual. We had a Chevy Colorado of that year and GM had a position on the electric 4WD switch for towing. I "think" the full size p/u did too, but the owner manual will tell you. When we bought the Colorado, the multiple salesmen couldn't give us the right story. The book doesn't lie.
  • Don't know what Brand 2500 but I would talk to dealer service guy about towing it 4 down.....hate to see a transmission ruined
  • Yes, your truck can be towed, but you MUST place the transfer case in Neutral then place the transmission in Park. We towed a 2005 Sierra for thousands of miles and now tow our 2011 Silverado behind the motorhome. Your 4x4 control has a line that goes to 2 buttons, which you push simultaneously and hold for 10± seconds. As you hold it the transfer case will go to neutral and a red N will light indicating it is now in neutral.

The big thing is to make sure your motorhome is capable of towing that weight, which most DP's are.
  • No. You need to at minimum have the transfer case in neutral.
