Trailer hitch on back of camper

I have a 22 ft. Premier Bullet and would like to put hitch on the frame to pull small trailer with a golf cart. When I looked under the back there is not much frame showing it’s closed in well. Had anybody done this if so how was it done. Thanks
  • Are you wanting to double tow behind a travel trailer? Might want to check your DMV for if this is even allowed. Some states allow this to be done by a fifth wheel, but not a TT or MH.
  • not much strength back there to support a hitch to tow anything except a hand full of air
  • I see some people double towing but I wouldn’t be comfortable with it. It’s not hard to take the cover off to get to the frame though, and I think it’s legal in la. If there is no one near you Mike Gerald’s in Baton Rouge does all kinds of stuff. They’d be worth talking to and I’ve always had good service from them.
    Good luck!
  • IIRC Louisiana is one of the states that allow triple towing (2 trailers behind tow vehicle) and both can be 'ball' hitches
  • Are you proficient with welding? You want a welded receiver than you can slide a ball mount into.

Remove the materials covering the trailer frame so you can work with it directly. The light extension pieces that attach the bumper are not worth attaching to.

There's several good videos on YouTube.

Something else, a small trailer like that likely has holding tanks in the rear of the frame that might need to be removed or relocated. Not an easy thing compared to the much larger 5th wheel trailers.
  • I wouldn't trust the OEM bumper at all to do that.. You will need to get a custom bumper/hitch setup done to do what you wish to do..

I doubt your OEM bumper would hold a spare tire or a single bike rack..

It's mostly only good for just storing the dump hose!

    Good luck!

  • I tow tandem with my fifth wheel. Quite a bit to consider doing this.

In regard to your question, I would suggest custom fabricating a hitch, and reinforcing the frame up to the axles. If you aren't a welder, find someone who can do it.

Even a little trailer will act as a fulcrum, and little bounces in the road will transfer to your TT, and up into your tow vehicle. It is important to adequately support the hitch.
  • Although it could be legal, is an insurance company going to offer up liability insurance should something go wrong?
  • With two ball hitched trailers? Not me. May be legal in LA, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

    X2

Plenty of people on forums have tried putting hitches on unimproved bumpers to put a platform on for their generator or cooler or bikes. As Mentioned, the leverage puts significant stresses on a bumper that's not made for it. Go custom and attached to the frame solidly if you go this route.

Also remember, your giving up the ability to back up more than a few feet when triple towing with ball mounts so pick up parking spaces, fuel stops carefully. Many have a hard time in many gas stations other than truck stops (flying J's, Pilot's, etc.) with a long rig. You will be joining that group with a triple tow.
