It's a great drive, my favorite way to leave Michigan if I'm heading West
What time of year are you looking at? If it's summertime, Lake Gogebic State Park is beautiful (as most michigan parks are), and wasn't very busy the past two times I was there.
If you're asking about places to park overnight for free, I'm not really sure. I forget if it was Michigan or Minnesota along US-2, but the Walmart was not allowing overnight except to commerical traffic per some county ordinance... thinking it was Michigan. Of course, the county owned its own expensive campground, go figure.
