TV Tire ply opinions

Hi everyone,

I have a 2011 Ram 1500 Quad Cab SLT 2WD 4.7L truck pulling a 32 OAL TT that is about 5600Lbs. My question is about tires for the truck, I have factory 4 ply 265/70 R17 I believe and was considering my options of 6 ply or 10 ply tires. I will be running close to, if not on, my max payload when hauling and we are heading out on a 16,000Km trip shortly. I am not having issues at this time, but my tires have 60,000Km on them, are 3 years old and probably have 50% or more tread left. I would rather not spend $1000 to $1300 dollars on new tires, but if I do, should I get 6 ply or 10 ply? I know the 10 ply will have a significant impact on the ride of the truck, but will the stability when towing be greatly different? Would the 6 ply make much difference in ride and/or towing stability? I am not planning to change tires, but if I hear enough reasons to do make the switch, then I will definitely consider it.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Rick

Play ratings are not used any more. Manufacturers now use load rating. The higher load rating tire will have a stiffer side wall producing a harsher ride, and better towing experience.

I have Michelin P285/75R16LT, inflate to 70 lb and AIRIRDE on the back of my Duramax. I get better wear out of tires that way. I don't like the torsion bar front end tho.

if you visit the tire rack website and choose a tire that offers a P rating, C rating and E rating you will see that the same exact E rating tire is heavier than the C or the P rated tire .
The additional cordage and construction necessary for an 80 psi ( E rating )just plain weighs more than a tire of 44 psi ( P rating ) shows up in the charts for almost all of the various tire models .
I choose to run a 265/75 R 16 load range E michelin tire instead of the stock 245/75 R 16E that came on my duramax .
I run those at 50 psi for 90 % of the time .
A benefit is that this set is at 60,000 miles and are not to the wear bars yet .
My duramax is a rough riding son of a gun .
When I want a smooth ride I become the copilot in her car .
I tried a set of oversized P 275/70R 16 Michelins on my previous chevy 2500 pickup and they did not last .
That was the stock tire on Toy Land Cruisers .
The P rated were more prone to road hazard problems than the E .
I only tried that once .
E rated tires have more longevity and have in my actual experience eliminated all road hazard punctures .
