What do I look and listen for when buying a 6.7 F350 Diesel

That is alot of miles for a 3 year old truck! Go and see a new one, see how it sounds, test drive it. Then compare that to the 2011 that your looking at. Stay at 2014 or older because the 2015 are different from the 2011-2014 mechanically. Anyway good luck.

Does it have a GN or 5er hitch installed. With that many miles I would suspect it was possibly used as a hot shot truck and not something I'd be interested in owning.

As this poster emphasizes look for an INDEPENDENT mechanic. Don't listen to brand loyalists.

As your nearly retired, the next step is retired and I'm assuming you will be on a fixed income. So you want the best truck you can get...durability and reliability.

I would also suggest you look at Dodge and GM.
Why restrict yourself to one brand ?

When you're buying used...you're buying unused miles and you want to avoid buying someone else's problem.


Also do your own research on this model Ford with this engine, powertrain. Look for problems that exist with this setup.

...HPFP exploding, valve train, turbocharger...those are just a few of the issues with the 6.7 Ford...I owned one...it was the worst POS I ever owned and warranty issues with the $10,000 HPFP issues are legend...much better off going with a Ram or GM of that vintage...at least they stand behind their customers...

I have a 2014 F 350 6.7 I've only had it since march but have owned diesel pickup trucks since 1990 and a bunch of semi diesel trucks since 1980 all I can say about this one is .....OH WHAT A TRUCK !!! I would want to look at the service records, These trucks are very quiet compared to the older diesels. Check the front end , ball joints, u joints and if they need replacing make sure they are greaseable. Have they been changing the trans fluid regularly ? The verdict is still out on the 6.7 but so far so good and they have a ton of power. 160,000 to a diesel this size should not be a problem and it should have many miles left in it, my brothers 7.3 is going strong at 387,000 miles. Good luck, hope it all works out.

What to look for? A Chevy or Ram....

While I'm not afraid of a high mileage diesel. 160K in 3 years means the truck has been run hard in my book.
Not a total deal breaker but too many miles too soon for me

Considering what you asked, these are the best recommendations rather than telling you to buy a Ram or GM or being reminded again and again and again about Ford not honoring warranty because of "alleged" water in the fuel.
