Will Expedition be OK with trailer I'm looking to purchase?

Hi!

Brand new - love the info I've found so far! Some is way over my head, so here it goes:

We've got a 2007 Ford Expedition (not EL). Standard tow package, no brake controller that I'm aware of... We're looking at a 2017 COACHMEN VIKING 21BH travel trailer.

We live in Colorado so some mountain towing may occur, but mainly would be just wife and I going to some reservoirs and parks on the plains. When going to mountains likely some weekend time with guys and another vehicle always available for any extra passengers and/or gear...

Would this be an OK set up for brand new RV'rs? What do I need to consider b4 purchasing that trailer? We do plan on getting a pickup in the future but hope to enjoy another year, maybe two of having no car payments :)

Thx in advance! Patrick
  • I have an '05 with the tow package and I am towing 7500. Most of the time I am closer to 6500 but it will take 8600 so I would think you are good to go. Just make sure it has a transmision cooler or you will need to add one.
  • Thank you everyone! Looks like with a couple/few minor mod's we'll be good to go. Appreciate the honest feedback!
  • Same vehicle and similar trailer. No problem with four people, two dogs and gear in truck.

I will tell you that larger sway bars on the truck and new shocks will change your life. Way more controlled ride.

    :-)
  • You should have no problems towing that TT with your Expedition. As others have mentioned, a WD hitch with integrated sway control, and a brake controller, and you're good to go.

If you have no towing experience at all, it would be to your advantage to get a couple of orange cones, go to the nearest big parking lot, and practice maneuvering and backing the trailer.
  • And let's emphasize one more time - a GOOD weight distribution hitch. Don't cheap out there.

And then when you're done with that, go and enjoy!!

With a tongue weight of 479 empty and GVWR of 6979 (unloaded 4069) your Expedition should not have a problem. Would go with a good WD hitch and install a brake controler.

Should be plenty of truck...and yes weight dis. hitch and brake controller. You'll be good to go!
    Enjoy, Brian
