Winter time Roof Question

Does or has anyone tarped their roof during the winter months? I have a cover and have heard that they often do more damage than help if not put on correct. I was thinking of putting a tarp over the roof this winter and wanted thoughts. I live in Cincinnati so we will probably see some snow this winter. I have a 26 ft Fleetwood Wilderness travel trailer.

I you have tarped, what did you use to hold tarp? Rope, bungee cords, or something else. Any tips?
  • I throw a blue tarp over the trailer every year. It is stored outside at our home. We fasten it to the walls of a bulk headed parking space. It works well because it keeps debris, snow, water, sun off the roof. It also lets air circulate around the trailer and the roof. If I need to get inside i simply release one of the tie down straps and go inside to keep an eye on things. This method has worked well for the last 6 years. I position the trailer so that water will drain off the roof.
  • It is my understanding that an RV specific covers, such as made by Adco, will not harm the camper. Mine hasn't suffered any abrasions, and we've had some pretty high winds already this winter. Tarps, on the other hand, will definitely damage your camper.
However, if you are looking for something with a waterproof material for the roof, I don't think any of the RV covers do that. I know mine allows rain to pass through (albeit slowly), then it dries very quickly.
Our latest snowfall demonstrated that the cover also prevents snow from being driven into the A/C housing, etc.
I also am confident that my TT is being protected from UV exposure, bird droppings, and leaves.
Indoor storage is obviously the best way to go, but I think the cover is much better than a tarp.
  • Covering just the roof with a tarp is a good idea, but if the metal grommets
rub on the siding they leave marks. If you cover the whole thing with a polytarp
you may have moisture problems on the inside such as your metal handles and knobs
    on drawers pitting.
I prefer the whole RV cover, they breath and work well for me. I know many
others on here don't like them.

  • I am concerned about leaks. Perhaps that layer of snow melting slowly and not running off like a quick rain shower. I had been keeping it inside but had to move it out. Unfortunately its a little too cold to do any repairs at this point. I don't know that I have any leaks just nervous. Would hate to find out the hard way.
  • What for? It will be subject to direct sunlight in the Summer. That would do more harm than in the Winter when it's protected by a layer of snow..
