Winterizing! this is CrAzy! Antifreeze blow out...

Ive winterized my Big Foot many times. Never seen this...

I tried to winterize tonight... put the pump tube into the antifreeze bottle....
When I turn on the pump the pink antifreeze blows out the out side CITY Water inlet!
Hardly a drop come out of any faucet. Went through 4 bottles... all ran out the city inlet..

Any one ever have this happen?

tks, CWT
  • Here's the booboo I did when winterizing a few years ago: I put the little filter screen in the city water inlet, back into its spot backwards. The cone of screen should face outside - if it faces inside, it pushes on the release button for the check valve and holds it open. So when you turn on the water pump, water comes out the city water fill. (smack forehead)

Needless to say, if that's the case for you - its a REAL easy fix. Turn the screen around.
  • This is a good learning opportunity that can help you be more handy and self-reliant in the future.

    1. It takes less than a gallon to winterize a camper. When the first gallon didn't do the job, you should have went out and looked for problems.

    2. When handy people discover a leaking city water inlet, they poke something up in there even if they're not sure how it works. There's nothing to lose in that situation. It already doesn't work; you're not going to make it not work worse. Use common sense, start with something blunt. Don't go ramming an ice pick up there like you're trying to murder something.

Don't be afraid to break a few metaphorical eggs in situations like this.
  • there is a little valve in that city water opening, that has a spring holding it closed, with an oring in there. If your system is under pressure and you stick your finger in the city water valve and open it, this oring will get knocked off center. some times you can get it back, some times you need to replace the whole valve :(
  • I was winterizing my new AF 990 and when the pump didn't stop at the half gallon point I started looking and sure enough I left the low point drains open.
  • Hey that sounds like me last year!!
Like others have said the check valve isn't seating right. I simply put a plastic plug in the hose fitting and used that all year. When I winterized this year it had reseated itself, and I had to push in on the check valve to get the pink to come out.
Hope the same works for you.

  • Cap it off or replace. Common problem.. but maybe not for Truck Campers.

This is a typical diagram of your water system. You can see the one-way valve between the PUMP and the City Water port. This is suppose to prevent the water pump from sending water out of the city water port when it is being used...

Sometimes you can just stick a small object into the city water port and exerise the one way valve flap... It probably has picked some debris keeping the flap from not sealing closed.

The other idea is to just hook up a screw on water cap that closes the city water port off...

  • You need to reseat or replace the valve in the city water supply. In a pinch you could cap it off.
