All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Canadian Camping outlook or No Alaska this yearThere is an article in today's Fairbanks newspaper that both tour bus and shuttle bus seats in Denali NP are nearly sold out for this summer. If you are flying up this year and Denali is on your list you should act very soon. Numbers of buses running are reduced and seating is limited to 50%.Re: Border closure extended RickLight wrote: Crazy4silvers wrote: My wife and I just drove home last week from Idaho to Fairbanks thru Alberta, BC and Yukon. It was very strange as after we got to Whitecourt, AB it seemed like a ghost highway and the further north we got it only got worse. Businesses closed or hanging on by a thread. Traffic was probably half what we normally see in February coming south from Fairbanks. We have done this trip for years. I don't know the answer but hope we all make it. Rick I have to ask; how were the border crossings? Crossing was uneventful, usual questions and asked about covid symptoms. Additional stop after customs booths for health folks to take our temperatures and explain isolating rules while in Canada.Re: Border closure extendedMy wife and I just drove home last week from Idaho to Fairbanks thru Alberta, BC and Yukon. RickRe: Another issue - crossing into Canada with temp registration?I've purchased 5 vehicles (3 trucks/SUV and 2 trailers) in the last 15 years in the lower 48 and driven back home to Alaska with temporary tags. Customs doesn't seem to care, only one officer wanted to see purchase paperwork and have never been stop by law enforcement officer. As said above that doesn't help the OP if his temporary tags are expired.Re: Itinerary For AK LoopIf you go to Valdez the end of August plan on having a fair amount of company there. It is the end of Silver Salmon season and the fish will be close to the harbor so the campgrounds can be fairly full. After 20 some years fishing for silvers there I can tell you August and Valdez normally spells rain so yes check the weather. More than one year we have had snow in the Summit lake area bring the boat home from Valdez in late August. I am probably biased since I live there but don't agree with skipping Fairbanks if you have never been in this area. Good recommendations above on what to see but also as pointed out the tourist destinations and campgrounds are shutting down rapidly by Labor Day. That time of year is fall here not summer, colors will be changing and areas around Fairbanks will probably have had a frost by then.Re: Best time to travel to AlaskaHere in Fairbanks most tourist attractions including most public campgrounds will be closing by Labor Day. We normally get our first frost in late August which is also the wetest month in much of the state. Bus transportation will end in Denali in mid Sept so you should be ok there.Re: Leaving Nor Cal in Early MarchFor the last 5 or 6 years we have left Fairbanks in February and returned the end of April to early May pulling 26' TT. Roads are always much worse in spring than February so keep your eyes open for frost heaves and potholes. Most of all slow down, for many miles 45 is too fast for me with the trailer. Also very few campgrounds open in northern Canada much before mid May. We are ahead of that so have our planned stops. Many motels etc will rent you a electric plug in. Only 20 amp so have the correct cords/adapter along. Roadside pulloffs can be very muddy if they aren't paved and many/most are not. We have driven all day in snowy conditions in late April.Re: best month to go too alaskaSo much of the answer depends on what you want to do. If fishing is high on your list you need to research seasons and run timing. If general sightseeing research the weather where you want to go but be advised that in general mid July thru August is the rainy season for most of AK. This means low clouds with reduced visibility and cooler temps. Also you're more likely to get smoke from forest fires from around mid June to the start of wetter weather. Mid May thru mid July is usually the warmest but mosquitoes can be bad then also. Here in Fairbanks we usually get our first frost by around the 20th of August and colors peak by around the 10th to mid September. Having said all that yearly variations can be large.Re: Fred Meyer Dump station?Neither one has one. Some gas stations do. Tesoro on South Cushman at Van Horn does. University Chevron on College Rd used to but haven't checked recently. State run campground off University Ave does to. None open until into May depending on when they thaw.Re: Off to Alaska Soon YES in FEBRUARYOne more comment on fuel, I wouldn't count on Rancheria Lodge without calling to be sure they are open first. Last two years the wife of the owner is having serious health issues so don't know the status of it right now. I have not checked. We will be headed south from Fairbanks two weeks from today so hoping for good weather also!
