Since becoming aware of those issues and keeping things topped off, I’ve had no problems. BobRe: Oil changeMobil One has 5W40 synthetic oil available now. It is called “European Car Formula”. I see it in Walmart, Auto Zone, and Advance Auto Parts stores. I needed it for my former Vespa scooter. BobRe: “Under hood generator”Gotcha. Not for me, really. I can’t see hauling 8AGM batteries in addition to everything else. I have no intention of doing long term boondocking. Thanks for the info. BobRe: “Under hood generator”So, how many watts was the UHG good for? I’ve not seen one over 600 watts, and that’s well below the 2800:watts of the usual class B rig generator. Did it have an electric clutch like the one on the AC compressor so that if only drew power from the engine when needed? BobRe: “Under hood generator”Sounds kind of like when I want hot water. So, the utility company buys and burns some sort of fuel, making fire and heat. That heats water in a boiler. But I can’t get the hot water from that boiler. So, this water is heated to the point of making steam. The expanding steam is used to cause the blades of a turbine to spin. The turbine is connected to a generator which produces electricity. The electricity is trucked to my home over miles and miles of copper wire. At my home, the too-high voltage is stepped down by a transformer to what my appliances can use. Now, the electricity is passed through darned near a dead short circuit in my tankless water heater. Cold water is passed over the glowing heating element and becomes what I wanted in the first place: hot water. How many times in this example does energy change its form, and how much efficiency is lost in the process? ?? Highjacking my own thread (temporarily, I hope!), BobWinnebago Solis reviewsI know the Solis is a Class B rig, but that forum seems to be defunct, so I thought I’d ask my questions here. 1. Does anyone have a Solis, and can they post a review? 2. Does the Solis have any provision for powering the AC operated appliances while underway? There didn’t seem to be a generator on the one I saw. Thanks! BobRe: Very Poor Results From Heng's Roof CoatingI redid the rubber roof of our (then) 10 yeR old DSDP with the product from Minnesota RV Roofing. 13 years later, now with new owners and no problems at all. Highly recommended! Bob“Under hood generator”We are shopping for a good used Class B van camper. A number of them are being offered with what they call an “under the hood generator”, which I take to mean a second, larger alternator to provide AC power in the place of a traditional generator. Can anyone who has used this system give me some info on how well this works to power appliances while you are driving? Also, is this second alternator equipped with an electric clutch like the AC compressor so that it is not putting a load on the engine when it is not needed? Thanks! BobRe: how to start Norcold 3 way frig on propanePerhaps I have created some confusion by the way I’ve described my setup. On the front, at the top of the fridge is a black control panel with, from left to,right 1. Mode knob (AC, DC, or Propane) 2. Fridge temp control. 3. White/green meter 4. Piezo push to light button 5. Another knob labeled “Temp” Of these, the only one that can be pushed in with ANY non-destructive amount of force is number 5. On top of the counter is a two burner stove. Each of the burners has a push and turn knob. When I push and turn one of them, I can smell propane. I guess I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to get a butane match to light the stove and see what happens with the fridge. BobRe: how to start Norcold 3 way frig on propaneOn my stove, the temperature control is pushed in and held to establish gas flow, according to the instructions on the flip-up burner cover. We received manuals for every system in the trailer EXCEPT the frig and stove. We didn’t bring our butane match lighter so I can’t light the stove tonight. I’ll get one tomorrow. On the frig, what I referred to as the “power selector” is actually labeled “mode”. None of the controls except for the temperature control for the stove has a knob that you can push in. Bob
