About 30% of the back roads to get to other places are true 4WD roads. Another 30% nice to have . Are the places you go have mud? water crossings. ONly have used 4WD with the trailer - and that was getting through mud, sand, and streams. One of those times - it was an RV park where the trailer site was real muddy But use my 4WD at least 2-3 times per month.Re: Pulling 5th wheel through YellowstoneWe just finished a similar trip . We stayed in West Yellowstone at Grizzleys - on the edge of town. You can dry camp at some of the camp spots. We were fishign so we were spending more time north of there on the GAllatin. Which if you came in via Bozeman - you follow the river all the way. I alway hear you never want to be Gardinier and have a repair problem. Think I would take the east entrance before Gardiner. When we were there we were in the NOrth east section and the north. SO the north section was under construction and the North east section has some higher passes to go over. More curves. If you go in through West Yellowstone they have I believe 5 lanes to get in/ pay fees. If you have the Senior pass or prepaid ticket - you can use the far left lane - which moves quicker. If in Yellowstone and you want to see Old Faithful - check on line for the phone number to call when the next expected eruption is expected vs driving there and finding out it just finished erupting. It was erupting about every 90 Min. We left and went out the south gate on the Sunday after July 4th. We expected heavy traffic. about 9:00 Am we sailed through the park - most of the traffic went north and we headed south. FYI - We went through the South Entrance - Think it was about 11:00 Am. The traffic coming from the south ( To get in the park) was a mile long. and not moving much. We traveled to the Tetons and Jackson. We stayed in Jackson ( Bring your credit card) Nice place . We stayed at the Virginian RV PArk - Clean park. (PLeas note - many GPS units send people about 13 miles away - so make sure yo have the address and/ or use the GPS coordinates. Highwayy 22 I believe is 10% grade over the Tetons. We went south to Moab ( Arches NAtional Monument) - Which was a blast - we rented a 4WD Jeep and did abunch of back country travel. We also hit Mesa Verde in Colorado. Grand Canyon: There are several options for the South Rim. You could stay in the Grand Canyon Trailer Park. Wall to wall trailers - but it is nice - you are close to the shuttles and trams. So you do not have to drive in the park . Realy nice. What ever you do - do not stop at the McDonalds in Tuscyon. Think the prices are 3x normal. You could stay in Williams Az. We have tried two of the RV parks there. Actually liked it better than Grand Canyon - probably because you can eat / drink at many restaurants . Nice town. You are about an hour from GRand Canyon. And even then there is a parking lot that allows you to get on the buses. SO you do not have to drive every where. North Rim - is about a mile higher in elevation than south rim. Cooler (Open 6 months of the year). . There are RV parks but I do not have experience with them. Will go this fall. I would check on where the RV parks are - We were at Jacobs lake the other day and they had a sign for RV park - Have no idea what it was like. Options for traveling: 1. You can go in through Kanab Ut from the north or from the east via Lees Ferry ( Which you take 89A north out of Flagstaff. ) Hope this helps.Re: AC's working???We had 117 in Vegas with black ashphalt every where. and kind of expected trouble. ( Reason no one is in their RV's they all go gamble until it cools off. But in Colorado - the darn thing froze up and started throwing ice chips. We had the AC unit serviced befoer leaving. Turns out the Temp sensor up by the coils loosened up and moved away. We had it reset and every thing works now.Re: Not happy with Forest River!IN the first two years of owning my Forest River 5th wheel. It was in repair for 320 of 500 days of ownership/. Roof replaced twice. Front Cap replaced - design error. Forest River responses were to deny any warranty until you threatened to sue. They were quoting things not covered - even thought the warranty said they were covered. Favorite response from Forest River VP: " You need to understand we sell trailers to dealers who sell to the public. Your issue is with the dealer ( thinking we have a lemon)" So my impression is - Forrest River Management team lacks honor and integrity. Based on 40 people I met at a Camper World Jamboree - It sounds like they have simialr experience. UNfortunately the Sunset Business fights every attempt to push improvements like in the auto industry.Re: Help - No Propane Flowing!INteresting - Had problems with my Propane system over JUly 4th. Went into camping world and they suggested new pigtail since they are usually the first to go. That did not help After doing some tear down and leak checking - Turns out the step down regulator on the drivers side was leaking - alot. We replaced it and we purge the lines and everything is working better Also had problems getting the water heater propane heater to light. Initially they thought it was altitude ( Yellowstone and Tetons). Turns out the nozzle was partially plugged.Re: Battery voltage when stored in coldINterstate Batteries put on a presentation a while back. Their recommendations were: 1. AT end of season - Switch batteries off. 2. Pull batteries, clean battery boxes and clean all connection points and cabling - neutralize the connections and battery post. 3. Store Batteries at home in warm garage. 4. We have AMG batteries - so they recommend recharging once a month through the winter vs using a trickle charger - About 2-4 months for us. 5. We have another 12V battery that we use if we need some electrical power. 6. Come spring: Check Boxes, Check cables. Clean and then once installed - spray on some protectant to prevent corrosion.Re: OregonIt is not that you cannot take the the roads out of Bend to teh Willamette valley. But pulling a 40 Ft trailer will be exciting in some of the narrow roads/ turns. Bad enough with no trailer in some spots depending which pass he decides to drive over. But it is up to the driver. Pick wisely, Drive carefully. The other post only mention Hwy 20 from Ontario to Bend. Which is fine - But did not mention the next step - Bend to the Valley over the Cascades. There are few passing lanes.Re: customer serviceForest River INC Attention Gregg Rollins P.O. Box 333 Millersburg, IN. 46543 Look up on the internet just get a number to the president ( Gregg Rollins) Call and if you are lucky you may get a response. OK now sit down and document in writing and with documents and pictures. Describe your issue and demand a response to the issue to fix it in a timely manner. Send it registered mail return receipt. Copy the dealer and send register mail. We were denied warranty on a couple of key issues. Warranty guys said it was normal. I documented and sent pictures. Actually had pictures from the first day. Low and behold suddenly they need to take care of it. All of a sudden - all the issues we had been denied were now covered. Now copy Berkshire Hathaway.Re: HAPPY JACK BUNKSWe have a Forest River5th wheel that has been in some sort of repair for 400 of the last 540 days. Most of the time you have to fight Forest River to get warranty repairs ( They always deny - then you send them pictures and documentation and they eventually have to do it. But most of those days are : FIghting for Warranty repairs, Waiting for parts, and then the actual repairs - if they send the right parts. The two largest times were - about 80 days each. Took a month to replace a battery. Really. There is a strong lobby for the trailer industry. What we need to push for is that Sales places need to have the authority to judge warranty repairs and do them without waiting for the MAnufacturers to play the - not going to warrant it game.Re: Backing in a 5th wheelI guess we do the following Pull ahead and position ourselves - Walk the area Drop a couple of 2x6 levelers at positions we would like it to sit at Wife gets the radio to tell me if I am about to hit anything. Other wise she is quiet. Other wise she has problem telling me to go the wrong directio. Then slowly back up and adjust as needed We practiced initially at SAM's Thhey had a big parking lot with lots of space and strips
