Your question pertains to the way solar panels work in general. It is my understanding that all of the individuals panels that make up the entire panel must be in the sun for maximum output. If some of the small panels are shaded, they actually act like a sponge and take away from the output of the rest. I installed my panels 6 inches off of the rood surface so that nothing on the coach roof could shade the panels.Re: Alaska or Not? Veebyes wrote: Met the CG host in Haines. The only bear 'weapon' he carrys is a compressed air boat horn. It produces a nasty amount of noise that bears, or anything else for that matter, don't like. Why carry a gun unless going on a hunting trip? If one cannot follow Canadian gun laws the I guess there will be no driving through Canada. The Authorities could not care less how responsible you claim to be. Millions travel through Canada & into Alaska every year without guns. No issues. As far as carrying the bike goes, you might want to consider leaving some of your toys at home. Alaska is a land of quiet touring bikes which do not scare animals away for miles around. BMWs & other such cross touring bikes are the common sight. A noisy Harley is a rare & very unpopular sight with those who are here to enjoy the stunning scenery & get a glimpse of wildlife. You've discovered the very reason some Americans ride American made bikes...the noise keeps animals off the road and alerts other motorists to our presence. Might as well ride safer as well as look good on American iron:)Re: Alaska or Not?Thanks for all the responses. Of you course none of you know me from Adam but I am a very well trained, VERY responsible US citizen and firearm user. I would never shoot an animal unless it was absolutely the last resort. In truth, I am less concerned about animals (because they are mostly predictable), and more concerned about the moral decline of people in general, human life is just not cherished as it should be, therefore bad people will hurt good people without a moments hesitation. I know the likelihood of an encounter with a thief/person intent on harming me or my family is VERY slim. But that doesn't mean it could never happen. The instances of such things are growing in number...even worse when good law abiding citizens are told they can't have a gun to protect themselves.(of course a bad person would rather not have to worry about his victims being able to defend themselves) I will probably just leave all guns behind and enjoy Alaska for the beautiful rugged country that it is. We will take our truck and go as far off the beaten path as possible for tourists with limited time:) Thanks again to everyone, I enjoy the opinions and wisdom of others!Re: July has been taken away.........My wife and I have both served on Jury's or at least started the process, but we have also contacted them and informed them that we have important plans during that time and have always been able to get out of it. They simply place you back in the system for a later date and it is usually much later.Re: Alaska or Not?But I still would not go into Canada without the shotgun. (if you need it, but don't have it, that's when you should have had it -- Yogi said it better) Thanks, you and I are on the same page! It is better to be prepared and not need it than be unprepared and regret it for the rest of your life which could incidentally be unexpectedly shortened:)Re: Radio/ CD - no poweryou need to confirm that power is actually getting to the fuse. you need a test light or a volt meter. It may be that the radio has an internal problem. Also it may have lost ground, which is usually a black wire on radios. Good luck!Re: Alaska or Not?I received this same advice from a friend who tried it and got caught! Thanks for the advice because I am the type who sometimes "questions" stupid rules and might be tempted to break them. Not in this case however...I will follow the rules! ParkCountry wrote: I totally understand your feelings on having a weapon on-board but do NOT, under ANY circumstances, try to bring it over the border into Canada! Each time I cross the border, I really get the 3rd degree from Canadian Customs officers. They will ask you the same thing, over and over again, only phrased just a bit different each time to throw you off in an attempt to get at the truth. I've often wondered if it's a consequence of having Idaho license plates. You are driving to Alaska to enjoy yourselves, NOT to be sitting in a jail cell wondering how the Canadian legal system will treat you, just because you wanted a little "protection". Ain't worth it, my friend. Just some friendly advice. Alaska or Not?Considering heading to Alaska in our 45 foot coach. We will spend two months minimum if we go. Concerned about Canada's restrictive policies on firearms, dogs (we have 3), and alcohol (we are not heavy drinkers but do enjoy a variety of mixed drinks so we have a well stocked "liquor cabinet"). I don't feel comfortable traveling without the means of protecting ourselves and have always heard that carrying a gun in the Alaska wilderness is strongly suggested. However, I am not paranoid or an extremist on this...just like to be prepared in these crazy times. We tow a full size pick up and have our Harley in the back. It is very solid and stable but is this too much to take over the highways heading North? We would love to have another couple join us but I imagine it is unlikely to find people with as much flexibility and spontaneity as we have. However, if you read this and are intrigued...lets talk! Any advice is welcome.Re: My DW says I'm anal/OCD.....am I?Jeff, You are right on brother! Whatever we do, do it as right as we can or go home... Your coach will serve you well with your eyes of perfection on it.Re: Flying Jays going Down Hill since Pilot took overI have been a flying j customer for many years and they definitely went down hill in my opinion. You could always count on their prices to be comparable to lowest priced competitors...now they are frequently the highest priced fuel around. they also used to count a debit card towards cash price but not so any longer...I guess we are supposed to carry thousands of dollars in cash so we can get the cash price that they advertise on the highway...
