All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Yellowstone TripI have considered all of the options recommended and am still considering an upgrade. Mostly because I really am unhappy with many features of this trailer. Considering that the weight probably isn't my biggest issue regarding mileage would it be safe to say that if I went to a lightweight fifth wheel I wouldn't suffer much more as far as mileage? I have a hard time finding a travel trailer that fits me well. Being 6'1" most travel trailers make for a bad night sleep. I have been considering a light fifth wheel like the zinger. It weighs about 8,000 lbs. I appreciate the feedback here since I feel the dealer just tells me anything to sell the trailer. ThanksRe: Yellowstone TripThanks for all of the responses. Has anyone used a scan gauge or the Bully Dog Tuner to help monitor stats on the vehicle to improve fuel economy? I think I need to learn better driving habits when towing. My truck is the work truck model so the features are very basic.Yellowstone TripHello, My family and I would like to take a trip from Wisconsin to Yellowstone next summer with some stops along the way. I am towing a Wilderness 3150ds 35 foot travel trailer weighing in at about 8,000lbs loaded. We tow with a 2013 Chevy Silverado 4x4 2500hd gas (3.73). Right now I am only getting about 7mpg. This gives me a range of 3 1/2 to maybe 4 hours before needing gas. That is in Wisconsin. I have never traveled out west. Should I consider a bed style external fuel tank? Would downsizing the trailer help? IT's not that I want to drive for 6 hours straight, but I don't want to be stranded. I feel like the mountains will cut that fuel range even more. Any thoughts would be great. I have considered downsizing to cut some length. 35 feet can be long in some places. ThanksTrailer Weight Vs. Fuel EconomyHello, I have been going back and forth on how to improve my fuel economy. Our current set up is a 2013 Chevy 4X4 2500 hd with 3.73 gears gas. I know that diesel would have been the way to go but it was too expensive. We pull a Wilderness 3150ds. It is 6700lbs dry so I am estimating it at around 8,000 loaded. We also tow with a Hensley arrow. Currently I am able to get about 7 mpg. We would like to venture further out west but I am concerned with how often we would have to stop. Would going to a lighter trailer that is a little shorter help with this? For example I have seen some 26 foot trailers around 5,000 lbs. Would it be enough of an improvement to be worth a trade in? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. one last thing. Do the vehicle tuners like the Bully Dog help with this at all? ThanksRe: Fifth Wheel Capabilities TruckI appreicate all of the feedback. So, if I am understanding this correctly if I had 4.10 gears put in some day I would greatly increase my towing capabilities. I know the cost is substantial but still cheaper than another vehicle upgrade. How bad would fuel consumption be with 4.10 gears vs. 3.73? The majority of our travel is local with a couple big trips each year. We did travel from Wisconsin to Disney last year. That has been the biggest trip. My curent set up is great with the hensley arrow and the wilderness 3150ds. I am just considering a upgrade with features and stability some day. I still feel like a fifth wheel will be a better towing experience compared to a 35 foot travel trailer. Am I wrong to assume that? I wish I had diesel but it was not in my budget for the new truck.Fifth Wheel Capabilities TruckHello, I have a 2013 Chevy 2500HD Work Truck model with the 6.0 Gas and 4X4. It is extended cab short bed with 3.73 gearing. I currently tow a travel trailer but was considering a future upgrade to a fifth wheel. How large can I go with this truck. I have tried several calculators online but it is a bit confusing. If anyone can help clarify I would appreciate it. Is a 10,500 lb dry weight fifth wheel too much?
