All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: Thor/Heartland buys out DRVWe'd heard good things about Heartland before purchasing our 2013 Landmark - but unlike some others posting here, we had TERRIBLE experiences dealing with Heartland customer service. For that reason, I'm not sure we'd purchase another Thor/Heartland product.Re: quality? We had the entire step assembly come loose on our Heartland Landmark (supposedly Heartland's "high end" - yeah - 5th wheel) while driving down the road Arizona. Did a lot of damage to the side of the 5er. Heartland would not cover the damage although we were still well within the "two year bumper to bumper" warranty period. Heartland said they'd never heard of this happening before, which is pretty odd since the fellow at the RV shop who we had remove the mangled mess (this took place hundreds of miles from home) said he'd seen the same issue (problems with the stair assembly releasing) three or four times on various brands of 5ers. Heartland referred us to their supplier who was, guess who - Lippert, who is famous (or infamous)for making high quality products. Lippert also refused to cover the repairs. Same with our door lock, which was defective and required that we take the entire door handle assembly out while reentering the U.S. at the Mexican border. The door would not unlock and we were basically told we either get the door open so border security could conduct their usual inspection, or we turn around and go back to Mexico. When we got home, we had to replace the entire door and once again Heartland denied warranty coverage - and referred us to the supplier - guess who again - Lippert, who also would not cover the repairs.Re: Feedback on Heartland Big Country 3450TSSorry to say, but I for one did not get good service from the factory, In fact it was absolutely terrible on a Landmark that was still under warranty. Heartland did everything it could to deny and ignore their supposed bumper-to-bumper warranty - - and that (good customer service and the two year warranty) was one of the reasons we bought Heartland. All I can say about this company is "buyer beware".Re: Trouble seems to follow us...We have a 2007 GMC Sierra Classic - manufactured in late 2006 - just before GM switched body styles and updated the Allison so it required def, regenerations etc. Pulls our 41 foot 5th wheel with no problem at all. Am going to try to keep it forever. gRe: RV dealers and MSRP above RV maker prices?Only way I know of to get a decent deal is via completion. On the last RV we purchased (about 1.5 years ago), we had already decided we were going to order the unit so we could get the options we wanted. I contacted six different dealers - and I told each of them what I was doing - contacting a number of dealers and was planning on going with whoever gave me the best deal. To do this you may have to go out a ways in regard to distance. Several of the dealers were over a thousand miles away from me - but I figured if they gave me a great deal, the drive was worth it. And with the internet it's simple to track down dealers all over the country. In any event, I got offers that varied by thousands of dollars - and I went with the lowest which was around 300 miles from home. I did the same thing when purchasing my last car. And regarding the RV MSRP, most dealers sent me order sheets, which showed the factory MSRP and contained a list of options. In my instance, these matched up - same MSRP and same cost for options.Re: Dually vs StraightWe've had both SRW and DRW with large 5th wheels and prefer the dually. Just gives more control and security. And as far as DEF is concerned, we bought one of the last dually 2007 GMC Sierra "Classics" around. GM changed models and engines mid year when the new exhaust control rules requiring ultra low sulpher diesel went into effect 7/1/07. We were in the process of retiring at that time and had found our favorite snowbird destination in San Carlos, Mexico. We've spent every winter there since 2007. Mexico doesn't have ultra low sulpher diesel except at a few stations along the border. My Duramax runs just fine on Mexican diesel. Anyone with a newer diesel engine, with DEF and requiring ultra low sulpher diesel is supposedly risking engine damage running the regular Mexican diesel.Re: Scary things encounteredWe've encountered bears on at least four separate occasions. Once I was stupid enough to leave our cooler on the picnic table when we went to bed. Bear woke us during the night cleaning out all the food. He pretty much ate everything in the cooler. On another occasion we were camped near a stream and watched as a bear walked across a log over the stream near out camp ground. Also ran into a young grizzly in Canada who was attracted by the fish cooking on our grill. Game warden who showed up said he was probably about a one year old, who'd just been turned lose by his mother. People accuse me of attracting bears.Re: Lippert components ???I've had some good and some bad experiences in contacting Direct TV. What I've found is they don't seem to train their service reps all that well. One rep will give you one answer; another rep, the complete opposite. In any event, you must not see the frequent polls concerning customer service, where Direct TV (as well as many other satellite and cable TV companies) consistently rank near the bottom. So, guess you get more than your share of "heads".Re: Lippert components ???You mention "over ten years" - perhaps that's the key - their customer service may not be what it once was???. All I can say is I haven't seen worse customer service from a company ever (that includes the likes of Direct TV, and a number of large banks and insurance companies). Maybe they flip coins - and you got heads, while I got tails.Re: Lippert components ???I admit Lippert must have made progress in resolving much of the problem they were having with their frames. As several have mentioned, I don't see as many complaints as I used to. I guess what most gets my gall is we've owned a number of RVs and each has had at least a minor issue or two. But - every manufacturer we have dealt with in the past has seemed to go out of its way to resolve issues (some even helping when it was clear the warranty had expired),. Maybe we've just been lucky in that regard. But, after having major problems with two components Lippert built, within a very short time frame, and then having Lippert basically tell us "it ain't our fault, whether it is or isn't" does not give me a warm feeling toward the company. Companies who want to maintain a decent reputation give at least some shrift to customer service - - and from our experience Lippert didn't do that in the least, In fact their attitude was more or less "too bad, so sad for the trouble and expenses our products caused you".
