If you don't drive a fair amount of miles yearly (I drive around 25K a year), the diesel may very well never pay off. If you are towing heavy, they sure are nice though.Re: Diesel vs gas...................... robna wrote: As well dont diesel oil changes and general maintenance cost more than a gas engine ie, oil changes, tune ups, brakes, suspension, filters, injectors etc. I am only asking as I only know by what Im told from friends that drive them. Good follow up questions... Oil changes: my big block took 7.25 quarts, my diesel takes 10 quarts and the change interval is significantly longer with my diesel, so it's less per year in oil change costs. Tune Ups: that's a gasser thing, what are you gonna tune up on a diesel? Brakes, Suspension: those are the same on an equivalent chassis, regardless of the engine, so that's a wash. Filters: air filter is the same, oil filter for me is the same price, fuel filter is more, but not as much as what i save in oil change costs yearly. Repair Costs: for standard things like belts and hoses, a wash...for major engine work, the one area where the diesel may cost you more. However, when I bought mine, the warranty was nearly 3 times as long on the engine, so some of that liability is offset by the better warranty. Have fun out there towing with whatever you use.Re: Diesel vs gas......................OK, but the figures I gave were more like 6 to 8 mpg. I drive 25K a year, so that's a noticeable savings in yearly mileage. I'm not saying you made the wrong choice, or should change your preference. However, a couple of the statements you made were inaccurate.Re: Diesel vs gas......................Yes sport, more than double the length of mileage for oil changes in many cases.Re: Diesel vs gas...................... robna wrote: Not enough of a difference in mpg between the two imop. The cost and maintenance as well as performance when not towing much more fun in a gasser. I would not argue they are better for towing no doubt about it!!! Hmmmm...I got 11-13 driving my big block empty, with a high of 15. I get 17-20 empty with my diesel, with a high of 22. The towing mpg differences are even more profound. Seems like a pretty nice difference to me. Performance-wise, the diesel suffers a quick turbo lag, then pulls as hard or harder than the big block and stays right with it in acceleration tests. With a modest chip, the diesel walks away from a big block in acceleration. My diesel costs me less in yearly maintenance than my big block did, due to longer oil change intervals. Did I miss anything?Re: Diesel vs gas......................People don't regularly tow at maximum RPM's. To do so would be horribly inefficient for gas or diesel. Big block gas engines certainly develop plenty of power to get loads up the hill. I had no problem with the pulling power of my big block. I had a problem with the fuel efficiency which resulted from tapping into that power when needed. With the diesel, I'm able to tow at reasonable speeds up significant grades, without having to watch the tank gauge drop by the minute.Re: Diesel vs gas......................Ace, Do you need me to connect the dots for you? LOLRe: Diesel vs gas......................Let's see.....some guy who wants to show a specific outcome: manipulates numbers only so they work to his advantage employs a number of if's and maybe's ignores other relevant info doesn't do any actual testing beyond figures on paper LOL...great link.Re: Diesel vs gas......................Marty, It appears you are right. KBB will let you option a 2500HD/6.0L with 3.73's. That must be since the 6L80 tranny was put in. I know that was a "no-option" option previously.
