Which one is the black tank vent? I assume the one closest to the bathroom, but you know what assuming can do. What is the second vent for? Appreciate the help in advance.1981 Honey on ChevyMy Son-in-law just picked up a 1981 Honey for under $1000 and he wants to fix it up for his family. The first thing is putting in AC. The previous owner said he use a window AC unit in it. So he bought one from Wally World and stuck it in the back window. For some reason he says it's not cooling the RV. Surely a small room window AC will cool a 23 foot RV? Anyone have any thoughts on why? And should they just get an AC put in the roof like most RV's have?Airbags or SuperspringsJust looking for opinions on which you prefer. I will only have my Camper on my truck for 1or 2 months a year, just for vacations and some weekends. I made some homemade lower stable loads like an old truck camper veteran suggested. But I don't think that will fix the sag in the rear end. Going with Airlift 5000 if I go with the bags. I am leaning this way just for flexibility of use. I can let the air out of them when not hauling Camper, which will be most of the time. I like the idea of Supersprings, and easy install, but leaving them on all the time has me a little worried about the ride when the Camper is not loaded. Thanks in advance......Re: Finally.........our journey begins!Wow, lot's of great responses. Thank you so much. Mud dauber's , nice, I never thought about that, but being in a barn, it probably has some. We will mark Eureka Springs down on the calendar! So, not sure I understand on the propane tanks. Mine are laying horizontal also. Can I still just exchange them or should I just try to get them filled?Finally.........our journey begins! Finally! We have taken our first step on hopefully a wonderful truck camper journey. Thank you to everyone here for helping since we joined the site last summer. This forum was/is awesome! After missing out on a two nice Lance 820’s in the last month we got/bought one today. It’s a 2001 that had been kept inside and hardly used. People got divorced shortly after buying it. It looked like it was in great shape, except for just lack of use. Everything works, no leaks, and no rust or rot in the wings. He is delivering it on Feb. 4, I will post some pics when we get it. When we decided we wanted to take this journey, our goal was to try and purchase a truck and camper for less than 30,000. I’m happy to say, we accomplished our goal! Now comes the scary/fun part, actually learning how to use it. We have never done this, so we are total newbies. We have leaned so much from all these great forums, (Lance, NATCOA, Open Roads) But still have much to learn. Ok, now in need help on what we need to initially do when we get it home. These are the items it came with for reference. -2 Batteries, (don’t know what size), one in battery compartment and one in generator compartment as spare - Two 5 gallon propane tanks. They look brand new, but I’m sure need re-certified - Happyjack tie down system. Would have to be taken off his truck and put on mine. (I am buying at Torklift system with Fastguns on the cheap that will work with my truck, and think I will use that instead.) - Cabover struts (Don’t know if I will use these or not yet) - Some 4 wheel roller dollys that go under the jack stands that he made. He said it makes it easier to load on truck. You can get close and then move Camper a little to get perfect. -I did notice that he had some kind of hookup inside his truck bed up by the driver’s side that he plugs into. I don’t have that on my truck. I figured the camper plug would plug into the back truck connector? Probably something to do with a special Lance cord I’m guessing. We will be just setting it in our driveway initially when we get it home. Here are our initial plans: - Clean it up inside and out, mostly just dust. - Get our new truck ready to haul the camper. (Tie downs, Airbags, etc.) - Check propane tanks and get them re-certified and filled. - Check into buying an ADCO cover for it. Now, what else should we be looking at or doing to it? It will probably be a couple months before we are actually going to be able to use it, and we will be going to a place a few minutes from home on our first trip in case we forget something. We are so excited, thanks again for all the help and help to come in the future!Re: S&S Truck Camper opinions please, looking for fixer upperThanks for all the info everyone. So far we have found maybe 6 or 7 on RVTrader. Ranging from 1996-2006. Heard nothing but good things about them so far. We have a vacation coming up and plan on making trips to see them in person. carmichael- If we get by your way we may try to get ahold of you to take a look. Thanks cruiseruser- Yes we really like the bubble windows in the front. What in particular special maintenance has to be done to them? We are looking at F350's right now.S&S Truck Camper opinions please, looking for fixer upperHi folks, new member and hopefully soon to be new to truck camping. I would love to get some input on what my wife and I have planned. We are getting close to retirement, 5 years away and want to start traveling and seeing the country. We looked at all the options and have done a ton of research over the last year. These forums have been invaluable. We decided that a Truck Camper is the way we want to go. We are planning on getting a better/bigger truck this year. Unfortunately, that will take up much of our budget. So instead of waiting a few more years to purchase a newer 15,000 plus camper, we have decided to look at buying a used one in the 5,000 to 10,000 ranges. The lower the better. I have some handyman skills and am willing to put in some work on a used one. Not to mention the fact, that we have never even done it before, so we wouldn’t be out a lot if it ends up not being for us. So I have been scouring rvtrader, craigslist, etc. for campers. We really like the floor plans in the S & S campers and have found several in our price range. Most built in late 1990’s to early 2000. I am having a heck of a time finding out any information on S&S truck campers, but the pictures look promising. Just curious if anyone owns one or has owned one in the past. Love to hear your thoughts on them. I can’t seem to find anything on the weight of the campers, length, etc. I would love it if we could get one that would fit on a F250/F350 non-dually. Not just limited to S&S, just like the look of them. Obviously any of the name brand guys would work also, but usually more expensive. (Lance, Northernlite, Northstar, etc.) Also like Alpinelite, but man they are very heavy. Basically we are looking for a fixer upper that has a good reputation. We would love to get started this year truck camping, but probably would only be able to do it with a used camper. Thanks in advance for any help!
