Cummins works on my 30-year-old engine and generator without quibble. They won't do any other chassis work, and I don't ask them to. Your best bet is to find a good independent, but the search might be expensive. The Cummins shop in PDX has lackluster reviews, or I likely would have.Re: Issues with Premier Freightliner Grit dog wrote: While it seems “unfair”, OP, they did you a favor and you don’t even know it. Why people use dealership service departments outside of warranty or recall work, in general, I’ll never understand. Idk maybe the same reason they shop at Trader Joe’s and pay 50% more for the same hamburger and Raisin Bran than at a regular grocery? Whatever that might be. Is the 10 year rule ridiculous sounding? Yup. Should they tell you ahead of time? Yup But it is likely for a few semi legitimate reasons. 1. They are probably so slammed with repair work and lack of staff in recent years due to everything Covid and the govt blessed us with including a shortage of new vehicles and the great walkout of working age males, that this is an easy cut. 2. The vast majority of their work is with commercial customers where their work and charges aren’t questioned or if they are it is likely by someone at least somewhat qualified to understand and speak intelligently about the work in question. 3. Similar to #2, private customers, especially older people in older RVs are much more likely to be wishy washy, penny pinching and complain about the rates, parts prices and hours (since they’re generally sitting around complaining about the price of gas and cheese all day as it is). It’s just a hassle if they already have full books. But, refer to the first part of my post and find an Indy shop. You have the same likelihood of getting good or bad service and a better likelihood of it not costing quite as much apples to apples. Yea you are probably right about the odds of the same if not better service from an independent shop..Issues with Premier FreightlinerHi all, I briefly tried searching the forum but couldn't find anything about this, but have others been turned away for having a coach 10+ years old at Premier Freightliner? I called Portland OR Premier Freightliner earlier in the week for an intermittent bucking issue under load. They told me first come first serve and to bring it in. No asking me how old it was and I didn't think to ask as I never heard of a dealership turning away their own brand for being too old. So, I make the drive down and am told "nope if it's over 10 years old we won't work on it." The next nearest freightliner is a Premier too in Salem, about 45 miles away. So if I want an authorized dealership to touch it I need to take it to Albany Oregon ~75 miles away! It is insane to me that a dealership will not service their own brand. I messaged Freightliner corporate and Premier's Service Manager. Freightliner corporate should update their website so it lists all Premier dealerships as not touching anything older than 10 years. IMO Freightliner should not allow them to sell or service rigs if they are going to restrict the age that they work on. That's a huge demographic of customer in a major metropolitan area they are turning away if they won't touch anything older than 2013. Anyway have others had this issue? Any recommendations for good Diesel RV mechanic in the Portland Oregon area? Thanks for letting me vent...Re: My problem now - First DP! ArchHoagland wrote: Nice looking rig! Buy some new fire extinguishers. Are you going to pull a car? I have an imported 70 series Land Cruiser that will be my towed!Re: My problem now - First DP! opnspaces wrote: Are you able to tun the dash fan at all speeds and only the AC works on high? Or are all fan speeds not working except high? If yo lost all speeds except high you need to replace the blower motor resistor. The resistor is usually in the ducting near the fan motor. Fan works perfect. The mixer door is behind the blower so I need to pull the fan to see what it is doing. The issue is only hot air is coming out - unless max AC is selected. Normal AC still has hot air. We found out through research that on Max AC, there is a valve that stops the flow of engine coolant to the heater core. That is why its cold on Max AC. I just need to verify what issue the mixer door is having (ie. Door is stuck, actuator rod fell off, something broke...)Re: My problem now - First DP! WinMinnie02 wrote: 19 year old unit your list of problems are minor enjoy Rving. Used IMHO is other people's problems so you did well. I assume you are ready to do your own maintenance. Indeed, I have a background as a mechanic (not diesel however), so I know my way around with a wrench (and when needed a hammer) ;) I get the sentiment about inheriting others problems with a used coach (especially almost 20 years old). Other side of that coin is - a lot of the issues new coaches have will hopefully be fixed by the prior owner. Also for us personally, no way we could afford a new DP currently. My problem now - First DP!Well after deciding to get back into the Class A life, then deciding to find an older/affordable DP instead of a gasser, my wife and I bought a 2003 Allegro Bus M-32IP on the XC chassis. The coach is a one owner rig with most all the receipts since new, with 64k miles. We are looking forward to vacationing with the family in this beast. Maintenance I am going to address right off the bat: - Service the air brake system. In all his receipts I don't see any indication of this occurring. The brakes/air system seem to be functioning great, and the prior owner always said that he would have freightliner do whatever scheduled maintenance is needed. I'm assuming they have been serviced at some point but since I don't know - and this is a huge safety item - I will be taking care of that before any trips. - Service the front wheel bearings and rear axle. Easy items to take care of, and I don't see them in the receipt history. Front hub oil looks a tad on the dark side. Issues: - Ice maker is broken, prior owner was quoted $400 to fix, not sure I'm going to worry about it... - Dash AC only blows cold on Max AC. This is an interesting one and I actually found an old thread on the irv2 forum where someone had the exact same problem. Likely, this is a stuck mixer door (or otherwise non-functioning door) at the heater core. The reason why max AC works is that the water is actually turned off to the core via a vacuum controlled valve, when it is on max AC. Plan here is to remove the blower so I have access to view the door and see how it responds as the temp control is moved. Hopefully the issue is obvious. - TV upgrade needed.. Tube TV was replaced with free standing flatscreen, but not HD.. I did not even know that was possible... At the time I got this one an entry level DP could be had for around $175K. And this one was $284k. A lot better house. Cummins and 6 speed Alison is the best drive train—-in my opinion. Which rig was it that you had to pull over to let cool on the climb?Re: Considering first DP - any advice? HTH, Wow that is great power out of a gasser.Re: Considering first DP - any advice? ferndaleflyer wrote: You need to ask him how hot the engine temp was on a long up hill pull. I had to pull over on the 7 mile pull up Fancy Gap in Virginia on 2 different occasions because it was hot. I had a regular car then but that 300hp was just gutless for me. The 330 is ok and will top the same hill at 55 with the car on a Featherlite trailer. I have had DPs since 1997 even a Monaco Dynasty with 4 slides and 450hp. I hated that thing and only kept it a year. Lots of pros and cons for them all but no matter what a higher end unit beats an entry level every time. Good luck. What was the make/brand of coach you had? He did say he never had any overheating issues (he towed a Saturn Vue all over the country with it), except for when the thermostat failed.
