I learned that towing with a 24-26' C is a personal decision (aren't they all) :) Appears that we'll just have to try with and without a toad to see what best fits our MO. Again, thanks! Is a toad necessary with a small motor home?My wife and I in the market for a class c (down grading) and we've begun to wonder if a toad will be needed if we buy a class c in the 24-26' length. If you have a 'c' in that length range, are you traveling w/o toad?Re: Too old to drive ? goufgators wrote: I know the decision is mine and mine alone. But, I also believe input from those of you who have personally experienced and gone through similar situations will be of assistance to me. About a year ago, I ‘hung up the keys’ and sold our coach due to my age. I’m 80. I was concerned that my driving skills may have deteriorated over the years and that it might not be safe for me to continue ‘piloting’ the rig down the highway. The reason I’m posting this is because I really miss having our coach and am contemplating diving back into RV’ing. I badly miss having the ability to climb into the motorhome and take off for…wherever. Please, for those of you 80 and older, I would like very much for you to respond and let me know if you are still driving and at what age. Also, if you have ‘hung up the keys’, at what age and was it due to feeling there might be an inability to safely operate the coach at your age. Please feel free to provide any other information that might help me determine whether purchasing a new coach, at my age, is or is not a wise move. Many thanks! I'm the OP. Thanks to all who responded with many good suggestions. Here's what we (wife and I) are going to do. No more large class A's. We will, however, continue to have a motorhome but it will be a much smaller one that my wife will fill comfortable driving...probably in neighborhood of a 24 foot class c. She was never comfortable driving the class a's we've owned but she says she'll have no problem with the smaller 'C's. We will avoid major city traffic congested areas such as Atlanta. And, I'll continue to monitor my driving and when (if) I feel my driving is no longer safe or if my wife tells me it's unsafe, I'll hang up the motorhome keys for good and relinquish further driving to wife-mate. Again, thanks!Re: Too old to drive ? danojeno wrote: Did it seem that close calls became more frequent, or did you feel that the number 80 somehow meant that it was time? My dad was always a way better driver than me and I think that holds true now that he's 85. I feel bad that you may be unnecessarily putting yourself out of the game so I think a third party evaluation would be good for you. That way you'll have confidence in whatever decision you make. Had one near accident on last trip when (embarrassed to admit) rubber-necking a vehicle accident along side the road. It might have been that near-accident that got me to thinking about my age and continued driving the 'big rig'. Reflex time or the diminished amount of reflex time is my main concern. At age, I'm sure my reflex time is not what it was at age 40, but just how much have I lost and is the loss of reflex time sufficient to warrant not driving a big rig? I believe it is and if we continue 'camping' it will be with a much smaller class-c.Re: Too old to drive ? Gjac wrote: Do you feel more confident driving a car vs a Class A? Maybe a good compromise would be a 24 ft Class C or B+. Thanks! I am more comfortable driving our car or my full size pick up. If we jump back in it will be a smaller class C.Re: Too old to drive ? wowens79 wrote: I'm only 52, but watching my parents age, and friends parents, it really varies from person to person. I know a 77 year old pilot, that I'd have no concerns hopping into a plane with him, but my mother in law at 79, I wouldn't let her drive around the block, and she thinks she is fine. The fact you are concerned, is a good sign. Do you have a child or friend that would ride with you in a car or RV, and give you an honest opinion?? Maybe you can travel, and pick less congested routes, or maybe a smaller coach. With the urge to go, I hope you can find a solution to let you travel, and enjoy your retirement! If we get back in, we are going to look for "less congested routes" and, again 'if', we won't go back to a large Class A...it'll be a smaller class C. Speaking of 'less congested routes', in the past, we've had to travel directly through downtown Atlanta. That won't happen again...!Too old to drive ?I know the decision is mine and mine alone. I'm looking for a CRV to tow and will not now consider anything above a 2014. Again, thanks...car towingThis topic has been moved to another forum. You can read it here: 30170780
