242 over Sisters in Oregon

We are heading to the coast and that's a direct route from where we are now. Doable? We are heading 126 to Florance...
  • You really need to purchase the "Mountain Directory". . . "no" on 242.
  • Also, for future reference, 242 is the one hwy that's usually closed in the Winter......it's not closed now, but you never know, it could be closed tomorrow.......
Heck, go on down south of Bend and take 58 over to Eugene and then on to the coast. :)
  • OR 242 is restricted to vehicle length. Believe it also is restricted to no trailers,
Continue west on US 20 and then pick up OR 126.
  • In June drove 126 from Eugene to Florence then 101 to Tillamook and 6 over to Portland. No problems.
  • thanks... glad I checked before we got there. We are in Redmond right now.
  • NO. Hy 242 is narrow and windy. It has a length restriction of 32 (?) feet. It is a beautiful drive if you have a toad. There is an observatory at the top with a short walk that you can see something like nine mountains on a clear day. Do a internet search for Oregon Highway 242 and you can get more info.

Assuming you are in Bend or Sisters take US 20/OR 126 over Santiam Pass then at the bottom take the 126 junction to Eugene/Springfield and the on to the coast. Good ride all the way.
  • Rt 242 is as twisty as a pretzel with very narrow lanes next to rock outcroppings. Not a fun drive in an RV.

Use 126 instead - its longer but you'll arrive with fewer scratches in the RV.
