301 southbound

Heading to florida in two weeks from Long Island, NY. Can I grab 301 off RT 1 in northern Delaware, take it to Ruther Glenn Va to avoid I 95 traffic. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Might also condider I-81 as an alternative. Thanks to everyone. Drive safe and enjoy life, Oilcan.
  • THANK YOU FTG,JPLANTE4 AND CAVIE YOUR IMFORMATION IS HELPFUL. BACK IN 1971 WE DROVE 301 BACK AN FORTH TO COLLEGE IN MELBOURNE AT FIT. JUST A BUNCH OF LONG HAIRED HIPPIES IN A WHITE VAN TRYING TO NOT GET PULLED OVER IN ALL THE SMALL TOWNS ON 301 SOME HOW WE ALL MADE IT NOW IT TIME TO RETIRE AFTER 12 YEARS MERCHANT MARINE AND 30 YEARS OPERATING ENGINEERS. BEST TO ALL YOUR FAMILIES AND ENJOY THE RIDE, OILCAN
  • US 301 is part of the old US route system. My grandfather used 301 and 41 to get to Florida for the winter. There was no I-95 (or I-anything for that matter).

US301 miles of 55 mph interspersed with cities, towns and shopping malls. Cross the Potomac over the Gov. Nice bridge and hook up with I-95 at Fredricksburg VA. It's a relaxing ride, slower than I-95 but it avoids all of the worse areas.
  • take 95
into DE, jump onto 495 back to 95,,, Around 3 miles will be the exit for Mall Rd, Rt 1.. take rt 1 south,,, As soon as you cross the St. Georges bridge stay to the right, you will exit before the toll plaza.

That will be a nice run all the way to the Bay Bridge with the first portion ( newer ) being a toll ( pay as you go ) road.. it will be 301S/50W

cross the Bay Bridge and about 20 miles will be Bowie MD and rt 301...

It will be about 90 minutes south on 301 till you get to Ruther Glen ( exit 104 ) on 95 just north of Richmond and 295
