Another toll question East Coast tolls

Planning a trip in 2018 from California to New England visiting many NE states as well as traveling through NY, PA, NJ. Understand they have gone to tolls with no toll gates. How do I handle tolls through all those states? Do I just wait a few months until I get home to receive a bill or must I do something specific with each of all those states?
  • You can still pay cash most everywhere in these states.

The electronic toll collection system is EZ-Pass. You can get (in most cases via mail) a transponder from any of the member states, though they do vary a bit in maintenance fees and discounts (in-state) and other similar details. The transponders do all interoperate with the other EZ-Pass states, so only one account and transponder are needed.

If you'll be taking the New York Thruway much, I might suggest looking into their motorhome plan, which charges you car rates rather than motorhome rates on the Thruway--a substantial savings. New York won't charge a periodic maintenance fee if you meet certain requirements--e-mailed statements rather than snail mail, and signing up for automatic replenishment, I think. (The NY/NJ port authority is a separate entity and they have different plans; sometimes it's easy to get the two confused.)
  • If you want to go through the booths with no one collecting, then get an EZ Pass transponder. I believe you can get them for different prices in different states and I believe that will cover what sounds like most of your travels.

This blog entry talks about how to get one in a cheaper state, and yet it is still valid in all EZ Pass states.
