Anyone else going to Newfoundland in 2016?

Other than doing a couple of iceberg viewing trips it is a go with the flow sort of trip. Whales I can see see from my own boat February through May most any day. Sometimes they can be seen right offshore 2 minutes walk from my house. Seen our share of wildlife too in 3 trips to Alaska. Been face to face with a young bear separated by nothing but the truck window. Moose have been elusive so seeing a few of them would be a treat.

We are sort of locked into the time window because we want to make the music festival in Canso then we have to back home before the end of July.

I know. We are a little on the early side but thats ok. Each of our trips to Alaska have been on the early side too. Beats the crowds & mosquitos.

What are you looking to do while here? There is so much more than just icebergs to see! Listen to Little Kopit, he was here on the west coast for many years. I have been on the east coast of the island for the past 6. June is a little early for whales, but there may be dolphins. I have seen them as early as May on Conception Bay.

Please read what I wrote. I said to keep an ear and listen for for semis, be prepared to pull over when they come through. & that the roads are built for TWO big rigs to pass each other going in opposite directions.


Hardly any one's idea of a jeep trail.

Oh I have no problem driving into some roads many others won't do but I am not taking on jeep trails. I am not going anywhere if there is a risk of needing a very expensive in time & money tow to get out. I carry all kinds of self help stuff & know how to use it but being 2WD & automatic you need to know your limitations.

Note my motto, "& I took the road less traveled by". You miss one heck of a lot of stuff by being afraid of it. I'll bet I could find lots of interesting views or things happening on the gravel roads in your back yard.

Nope, we won't be bouncing down any gravel roads. Not any distance & not with the trailer. We have done the Alaska/Yukon TOW 3 times but as far as unpaved roads go that is kiddie stuff.

If you have a 4wd wheels as part of your touring power, many more. Red Indian Lake and Grand Lake for 2 places can be circumnavigated by 2wd vehicles of several sizes. & east of Red Indian Lake one day I started down a side road, but came to a sign, "No gas for 65 kilometes". That's an indication of an industrial operation further down the road. Then there is the area west of Deer Lake, north and west of Corner Brook. It's a logging area, so keep your ears tuned for those big rigs heading out at 100 klicks and get over to the side. Yep there are roads in that territory so semis can pass each other going at highway speeds in opposite directions. Plenty of people have cabins in that area and fish the many waterways. Been there, enjoyed all that.

We are doing the early trip too & the challenge is to find open CGs. Anything anywhere before May 24th is difficult they are there. We don't mind dry camping either but having power, even only 30amp is fine. 20amp is doable in a pinch.

We are looking at entering Canada near May 1st, Lunenburg for the May 24th holiday. Every Canadian who has something that resembles a tent or better will be out then so it is make reservations & hole up somewhere to let the storm go by.

Planning on the ferry to NL about June 1st & back in NS for the Canso Music Festival 1st weekend of July. The icebergs will be the main attraction for us in NL so hoping for a couple boat trips plus coastal viewing.

Where can you/allow to boondock in NFLD? Are there any website links?
