AZ (old) 66

Whats 66 like between Seligman and Kingman? Figure its got to be more interesting than (ho hum) I40 but don't care to have any excitement be from driving. Looking at elevation change seems like its mostly downhill from Yampa but not too steep.

Any insights on the drive, road surface, points of interest etc welcome. Thanks.

While I loved the travel segments by Charles Kuralt, he kinda "borrowed" this statement from John Steinbeck's "Travels With Charlie" (a great travel read): John Steinbeck: "When we get these thruways across the whole country, as we will and must, it will be possible to drive from New York to California without seeing a single thing."
  • Just drove this route a few weeks ago. Fairly flat, all good road. Very little traffic. A much nicer drive than I-40.

Seligman and Ash Fork are small towns with several nostalgic shops and restaurants.

Near Valentine,AZ is an animal rescue sanctuary. Well worth the stop. Lots of exotic animals of every kind.

East on I-40 another small stretch of 66 runs thru Williams. A very fun old route 66 town. Lots of shops, cafes, zip line, Bearizona animal safari etc.
  • It's a quiet road. The towns are small.

Peach Springs is in the reservation. I think this is where you turn north to go to the Skywalk, but not sure.

On the west end is Hackberry, a one store, one stop township with an antique store FULL of 66 stuff. Interesting stop.
  • Seligman and Ash Fork have some old style cafes and tourist oriented shops. A lot of motorcycle groups on the road, but nothing exciting. The scenery is not that different from I-40. Go to the AZ DOT site for construction info. I remember it as cracked asphalt with little or no shoulders, but no bad potholes either. I have not driven that way for 10 years though.
  • Greg,

If you did not buy the guide book "EZ66" do it. (ISBN 0988924617)
    It will be well used.

Rt 66 existed in three or four stages and some no longer exist and yes it is much more interesting than I-40.
