Baja Road Report

This is a road report I just received from VAGABUNDOS DEL MAR
BOAT AND TRAVEL CLUB, http://www.vagabundos.com/ , via email.

"ROAD REPORTS
August 2016

Members currently traveling the Baja have reported short delays due to construction. Following safe driving methods on the road, there haven't been any reports of problems. Check the Hotbox on our website for detailed road reports.

In San Quintin, the road from Don Eddie's past Lazaro Cardenas Road, about 13 miles, is now paved. This is a long awaited road improvement.

About 12 miles south of Guerrero Negro the road is under construction. Travelers will be detoured on to dirt washboard roads for about three miles.

On Highway 5, between Puertecitos and San Felipe, some of the potholes have been patched. Keep your eyes on the road at all times. Unexpected vados might surprise you and sometimes they are difficult to see ahead.

10 miles south of Ensenada there is road construction. Little by little they are widening the road and taking out some of the unsafe bridges. You'll have approximately 10 miles of bypassed dirt road. This bypass area is reasonably in good condition.

From Catavina to the Bay of LA turn off, the road is in BAD condition, potholes and big sections of blacktop missing.

About 10 miles north on Highway 1 out of La Paz is the most substantial construction.

Last but not least 24 miles of incomplete road is south of San Felipe on Mex 5 to its junction with Highway 1. There were large crews of people and equipment working on the road."

  • Reasonably Good Condition...

At 5 mph in a toad, yanked factory wiring harness loose from three relays, broke a rear view mirror loose from the windshield, snapped a tailpipe exhaust hanger, and broke a left rear electric window lift lever nylon bushing. One of the worst desviaciones I have ever suffered in Mexico. The pickup truck ahead of me lost an exhaust system which I dodged.

This construction is immediately south of Sto Tomás and extends for seven miles.

The road re-hab entre Guerrero Negro and Vizcaino was finished in mid July. This tramo is in excellent condition. The detour was 4.6 miles not 3.

Confirmed the tramo adjacent to Laguna Chapala is a piece of snot. A pickup truck with six men overloaded with patch asphalt was doing their best to fill the worst of the craters.

The carretera municipio through Sta Rosalia is another snot rag. Rough as hell.

Going 4 August. Coming back 7 August.

Take road reports including this one with ten grains of salt followed by a tarro of mescál. They are near useless.
