Bakersfield to Temecula

I'm looking for the best route from Bakersfield thru or past L.A.to
Temecula. Towing a 25.5 5th wheel.

Thanks for any tips on least busy route and time of day.
  • Have to agree with the majority 58 to 395 to the 15, it's a little further that way but a lot less of a headache
  • Well . . . I'm writing this from an RV park in Bakersfield, having retired from Temecula. Make the drive a lot. As previously stated, the best route is 58 to 395 to 15. The part of 395 you will be taking currently has K rails on your side, narrowing the road while it is being worked on. Probably for about 10 miles midway between Kramer Junction and Adelanto. And drive the posted speed limit in Adelanto! 215 has a lot of construction going on right now in the San Bernardino area and it's always a mess in the general area of UCRiverside. The best way to avoid traffic is to avoid being on the road during commuter hours. And don't forget the winds. Yesterday the easterly winds were gusting into the mid 20's when we came through Tehachapi around noon. Afternoon desert winds are a common issue along 395 to Cajon Pass. Frequently there will be crosswinds heavy enough on 15 from roughly Devore to Rancho Cucamonga to make driving an RV challenging. They will occasionally close it to high profile vehicles altogether. Every year a big rig or two gets blown over. Which is why I always spend the night in Bakersfield before heading to Temecula. By leaving Bakersfield by 8:30am, I usually miss the worst of the winds and get to Temecula between the commuter rush hours. But I always check the weather predictions first. I did hit snow in Tehachapi one Thanksgiving. Cal Trans got it cleared very quickly. Much less of a problem than Grapevine usually is.

Are icy roads a common issue around Tehachapi Pass on 58 in the winter?

I made the mistake of traveling thru LA area on Thanksgiving day to Temecula from Santa Barbara. There was no routes that seemed to avoid 5-10mph traffic most of the way. Won't make that mistake again!
VERY rare, and it will be well reported if that happens.

I agree with the rest with the 58 thru the desert. You can never forcast the traffic in Los Angeles at any day or time.

  • I agree with Gemstone. 58 to 395 to 15. I would recommend staying on 15 as opposed to taking 215. I use this route all the time.

    Stay safe.
  • I just came through there yesterday. I took 5 south to the 210 east and went around LA then I took the 57 south to the 10 east to the 15 south. There was light traffic all the way. This was about 10:30 am on Monday. Drive safe
  • Sunday morning is probably the best time to traverse the LA basin/Inland Empire, but if your goal is to eliminate as much of the congestion as possible, then I would go east on 58 to Kramer Junction, south on 395 to the 15 and take it or the 215 to Temecula. The 15 is a straighter shot, with fewer changes.
