- darsben1ExplorerTime of day is everything.
but from 78 take 95 north then cross the George Washington Bridge (upper level only). Stay on 95 (Cross Bronx Expressway)use the middle lane until it splits for the Throg's Neck bridge. After you cross the bridge(do not use right lane on bridge if possible as it splits off) stay on the Clearview Expressway until you get to 495 East.
If you have Sirius radio tune to channel 133 for NY traffic if not 1010 AM is the traffic/weather station for NY.
From about 6:30 AM until 7:30 PM the traffic is really bad.
If I knew where you were headed I could tell you more. - brooks379ExplorerWhat darsbeb1 said !! That is one crowded interstate into LI at times !! Best time is later in the evening or real early in the morning IMO. In the morning 1,000,000 people are headed into NYC and in the afternoon 1,000,000 people are headed back home to LI.

I'm going to Battle Row Campground. - Road_PhantomExplorerWhen in NY, definitely stay off any hwy that is a Parkway, ie: Northern, Cross Island, Meadowbrook, among others. They have very low overpasses and do not accommodate commercial as well as RV's.
The Tappanzee Bridge will take you too far north. I cross the Washington Bridge after 11:00 at night and breeze right through. The daytime can be gridlock. If you can, go over the bridge very early on Sunday or leave NY early Sunday. There is no construction on Sundays except for a few priority sites. Traffic on Sundays may build up after 9am, so by early, I'm thinking around 7. - Discovery8ExplorerThank you.
- darsben1ExplorerThe Tappan ZEE is further north than the GWB but you still would be caught in the Cross BronX traffic(if you come down the Thruway I87) you could take the cross Westchester expressway (truck Legal) to I95 south and then approach the Throgs Neck from that direction. If there is a massive jam at the GWB AND the cross Bronx it might be worth it. But to get to the Tappan Zee the only legal way I know is 78 to 287 to 87 (adds about 18 miles to the trip). So keep the radio tuned to 1010 WINS. The station will tell you the wait times to get across the GWB INBOUND toward NYC for both the upper and lower level. You want the upper level only. I have seen the back up over one hour. Then the Cross Bronx can have a back up just as bad. Unless there is an accident on the GWB then a long inbound wait time for the GWB means almost for certain a long delay on the Cross Bronx.
Where you thinking Verazzano bridge? The tolls are really vicious there . First toll is the outer bridge crossing which is $34.00 with EZPASS and $42.00 without. Then the Verazzano narrows bridge is $34.00 cash or $20.50 EZPASS.
For the campground resist the urge to take the Southern Parkway. It looks tempting but it will shave a foot or so off the top of your rig. Exit 48 to Round Swamp Rd. - Discovery8Explorer

I got the the Tee Zappan Brdige and GWB bridge confused. Thanks for the tip in the Southern Parkway. - Road_PhantomExplorerThe Verazzano Bridge is free inbound. You pay double on the way out. That's why most trailerist go out through the Washington Bridge. But then you have the traffic on the 287 which I believe has construction still and the BQE going through Brooklyn is choppy. Best option for us is the W Bridge very late at night and you will be fine.
