Best route from 101 to 1 in northern CA.

Coming down 101 pulling a 29ft. 5'er what would be the easiest route to coast & Hwy 1?

We went from Willits to Fort Bragg several years ago in our "C" but it was pretty twisty and I wouldn't what to try it with the 5'er.

Thanks

  • I agree as well - Hwy 20 is the best bet.

I was up there again a couple weeks ago and did that drive several times in the toad. My only complaint was that there were a couple RVs that wouldn't use the pull-outs, making for long lines of cars backed up behind them.

Please be considerate of others on that route (and other similar routes). Those guys give RVs a bad reputation.
  • Ditto Willits to Ft Bragg., Do it with 40 footer and toad. Just pull down to 2nd gear and you can stay off the brakes most of the time. Slow down and enjoy the view. If traffic backs up just take your time and pull over when you find a good turnout. Stop half way and stretch your legs. Fresh air and enjoying the journey versus just the destination.

If you need a good rv park to rest before going to Ft bragg there is a really neat KOA in Willits. Petting zoo, water fun for the kids, shade, and great people. There are hiking trails and a fishing lake too.
  • Agree with the above. Hwy 20 from Willits to Fort Bragg is actually the best. I live here on the Mendocino Coast and have to do that route with my 27ft 5th wheel all the time. Not a problem.
  • Your best choice is hwy 20 from Willits to Fort Bragg. We travel that route regularly with a 40' motorhome towing a car with a total length of 58'. Previously we towed a 36' tt with a combined length of 56'. You should have no problem crossing over to the coast.
  • If going North on 1, get off at Fort Bragg for sure. Really twisty staying on 1 from there to 101.
  • If I had a choice, I would take Hwy. 20 like you did before. Taking Hwy. 1 from Leggett is not a fun drive, it is more twisty than Hwy. 20. Have a Great Trip!

  • 101 and 1 intersect at Leggett. But all those roads are pretty twisty. Getting on 1 at Leggett is really you're only other choice, unless you want to go way south of Willits and come back up on 128. It's been a while since I've been up there, but if my memory is correct all those roads are close to the same driving conditions.
