Best Route from Marshall Texas to Kerrville

Looking for the easiest route from Marshall Texas to Kerrville (Buckhorn Lake Resort). Travelling with a large 5th wheel.
I have considered the following but concerned with Diesel fuel availability on some of the route.

I-20 to HWY 19 to Weston HWY 31
A short route on I35 to Killeen Hwy 190 to HWY 281 to Fredericksburg,
HWY 290 to HWY 87 to I10 to Kerrville.

Enjoy seeing the country rather than just interstates.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

THanks

  • I've made that trip many times and never had a problem getting diesel. We have never stayed at Buckhorn, but have seen it from the freeway several times. Looks like a nice RV park.

One suggestion I have: while in Kerrville visit the western artists museum--I know that's not the name, but it is surely the idea. We always enjoy going there.

We usually stay in Fredericksburg and just drive over to Kerrville.

Lots to see in Fredericksburg: Museum of the South Pacific, Wildseed Farm, Wineries all around, Luckenbach, Enchanted Rock, and in Spring bluebonnets all around.

    Enjoy the visit.
  • We will be staying at Buckhorn Lake as well. Will do that SAT view to check everything out.

HMM..... says I am from Texas, but no.... We are from South Carolina.
  • Thanks y'all for your recommendations.

Any issues making fuel stops (diesel) on 281?

Having lived and very much enjoyed living in North Texas for many past years whenever someone asks for directions I usually joking tell them to GoTo Wichita Falls and turn left or right... That almost fits here haha...

X2 on visiting Fredericksburg TX during the Spring. The flowers in the fields there will blow you away... Bluebonnets and Indian Paint flowers everywhere...

Found Most Texas rural FM Farm Roads TX State Roads are in rather good shape. Usually straight with no turns as far as you can see...

If you got some time on your hands you can also use GOOGLE MAPS and select the STREET VIEW MODE and just cruise down those roads listed above. Allows you to look at some of the possible tight or congested areas... We do this all the time especially looking for close-by camp grounds. Sometimes the STREET VIEW will bring you right into the camp grounds. You can also use SAT VIEW as well to check for shade from trees at the camp grounds and pick out your best camp site before checking in...

  • Agree with padredw. We like to avoid Austin if at all possible. We were in Kerrville in June and went down 281 from Jacksboro to Johnson City, west to Fredricksburg and then 16 to Kerrville. We stayed at Buckhorn Lake RV Park. That is a beautiful park and super people. Several in our group had larger fifth wheels (ours is 34 ft.) and they used that route with no problems.
  • Here are two possibilities:

1> Take TX 43 to Henderson to pick up US 79. All the way to RoundRock then to Austin and west on US 290 to Fredericksburg. Then TX 16 on to Kerrville.

2> As above through Palestine, then take US 84 to Waco and down I-35 to Temple then US 190 over to Lampassas and US 281 South to Johnson City then US 290 and as above to Fredericksburg and Kerrville.

Of these, my choice would be number 2 because I try to avoid towing through Austin at almost any cost.

I live 30 miles west of Marshall and make the trip to Fredericksburg every Spring--and sometimes more--each year.
