Best route from Niagara falls to NYC (liberty harbor)

I am trying to figure out the best route over to NYC. Google/ bing and mapquest take me 3 different ways. Goodgle takes me I-90 to a short cut (taking rt 20 to rt 41 which leads to I-81) and then leading to rt 80, into 280 and leading into jersey city. Are there any restrictions I need to worry about? Any major issues to avoid on the route above? Any problems with the short cut? Should I just go through Syracuse per bing maps and keep it simple, maybe faster)?

I get the traffic thing, but I am looking for the most direct. I hope to be arriving in the most congested areas 1 or 2pm.

My biggest concern would be my length (about 55') and any hazmat concerns closer to the city.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Great, thanks for the info. That is very similar to the map-quest route. Have you ever taken Route 63 to 36 to cut across from Batavia or is that not worth it?

We took that route a couple of years ago when we went from Darien Lake to Watkins Glen. Took highway 20 to 63 then to 36. It's a good route but you drive through some small towns if I recall correctly. No low bridges to worry about. Coming home we took I390 to 36 to 63 through Batavia. We made pretty good time.

  • I live in Syracuse part time. MY preferred route in my MH is 81 south to 380 in Scranton. 80 to 80 east and then for you New Jersey turnpike (toll)to the correct exit.
This route is all controlled access and no tolls till NJT
From Buffalo you could get on 390 south justt before Rochester which will take you to 86/17 east to Binghamton where you can catch 81S to Scranton. Parts of this 86/17 route are not controlled access as yet and go through a town
I am doing this run on Friday from Syracuse only I will be going out to Long Island.
Depending on your speed the places to stay enroute if needed would be the Flying J in Gibson PA. A rest area just after the 380/80 junction about 2 hours 15 minutes from NYC at 55 miles per hour. The outlet mall about 15 miles west of the PA/NJ line. A rest area at Mile marker 7 in New Jersey about 1 hour 20 minutes from NyC

No hazmat concerns either route I have outlined
