Best Route from Rapid City to Glacier NP East Side

We're in Rapid City and going to Glacier National Park. Is it best to stay on the Interstates with a motor home or try to zig zag through Montana on US highways? Any suggestions for alternate roads?
  • We take 3 out of Billings to US-12 at Lavina, west to 191/3 north to US-87/200/3,then west to Great Falls every time we go to G.F. All very good roads.

I -90 is easier, longer, boring. Look at going north at Spearfish to Belle Fourche on 85 to 212 west through Broadus, Mt. to Garryowen. Then I-90 to Billings then north through Livingston to Great Falls.

We did that drive last summer, taking 85 to 212 to I-90.

However after traveling west on I-90 out of Billings, we took 191 at Big Timber to 87 to Great Falls. At Great Falls, we took I-15 up to 2.

If you want to stay off of the interstate, you can take 89 out of Great Falls. 87 joined up with 89 east of Great Falls, so you are already on 89, when you get to Great Falls.

Returning we came back on 89 all the way to Livingston. That passes through Lewis and Clark National Forest, but has the disadvantage of having a very long (many miles) uphill.

We did the trip in our 2007 Journey pulling a CRV and had no difficulty.

  • Oh brings back last years camping trip memories and the year befores trip from east coast. Take the scenic trip so much more interesting. Broadus has a funky rv park even if it was 118 degrees out when we got there. Hubby just said to tell you to go to Devils Tower.
