Blues Highway (61) From Baton Rouge, LA to Helena, AK

Anyone familiar with this road? We are considering it as a way to get from a stop in New Orleans on our way from FL to Santa Fe next month. Is it a decent road for a 34 FT class A pulling a Honda? Does it run through the towns or skirt around them?

Thanks,
Cass & Lynn

  • We were just there. I agree with sdianel completely.
We enjoyed Tom Sawyer park in Memphis area, and the casino-related RV park in Vicksburg.
Explored Hwy 61 and the Blues trail via motorcycle.
    Enjoy!
  • It's a good road. While it does have some areas that are 2 lanes, some of it has 3 lanes and some 4 lane divided. It does go through some small towns. Be sure to watch for US61 vs Bus 61. Do not take Bus 61. It turns right in Natchez with some traffic but not too bad. In Vicksburg do NOT take Bus 61. Get on I-20 east for 4.4 miles, then take exit 5A for US61 north. At Leland MS it merges with US278. I would not try to cross the Mississippi River at Helena Arkansas. The bridge is very narrow. Either cross at Greenville MS (new bridge) or go on up to Memphis and cross on I-55. We either stay in Lake Village AR at Pecan Grove RV park (not fancy but does have pull thrus). Or we stay in West Memphis AR at Tom Sawyers RV Park on the MS River.
