We go to Shiprock and overnight in the parking lot behind Wendy's. There will be drunk Indians trying to panhandle when you first get there, but a couple of no's and they will stop bothering you. Never felt afraid or threatened there. We like the small Chinese restaurant that is across the street and a little north of Wendy's.

Texan; I will be headed home in the next month by the route that you have described in your post. I,m wondering if you go to Shiprock or Durango on 160 before picking up 550. I'm returning home to Texas from Seattle in the next month and am not pulling this year (pickup and canopy only). Thanks John.

Figured that and that is why I do not recommend Kanab to Flagstaff that time of year. Now, an alternate would be US-6 off I-15 at Spanish Forks just south of Provo to I-70 and US-191, then through Moab to US-491 to US-160 to Farmington, then pick up US-550 to ABQ. Have done that route several times in early spring and can't think of anything along that route to worry about.

Ely to I-15 and down to Las Vegas is about 200+ miles out of your way. We travel back and forth the way I gave you and have never had a problem with heavy snow. We have a daughter that lives in Hurricane, just north of St George and also travel that way now and then. Much faster to come down 6 & 318.
