I suspect the OP was talking about a US Customs agent, not a Border Parol agent. US Customs restrics the importation of meats, plants, wildlife, etc into the US. I've crosses the border countless times and never had an issue...don't lie or be ambigious about what you are bringing back in to the country and you will be fine. FYI, If you fly from Hawaii to the Contenential US, you are also subject to the same US Customs checks and questions....they help protect the mainland US from invasive species (as an example).
