The CBP (Custums and Border Patrol) agents that man the booths do not know who you are or whether you are the next illegal importer of contraband or a GOOD guy, so they are trained to ask some cuestions that will throw you off and watch what your reaction and answer is, they only have a few seconds to asses whether you are ok or not.
Answer evasive or or try to out smart the questions and a red flag goes off that something is not right, then the hard questions and attitude come out, and the encounter can be a bit intimidating, specially if an event has taken place and you cross the border a few days latter, they all get eddgy, they are doing theire job.
Yust think what this country would be like if the borders where open or poorly maned, a drug vendor in every corner?, there would be no CITRUS or ADVOCADO indutry in the States becasuse some idiot brougt fruit with a parasite.
In California we have had to release impotent male flies to counter the plage that was brought in from South America by one person who smugled some oranges years ago.
We still have more rights and freedoms than any other country on the planet, so if someone got some feaders ruffled at the border maybe they did something stupid, and did not like it, since they are complaining.
